Postcapitalist Desire

-
Story
Beginning with that most fundamental of questions - ''Do we really want what we say we want?'' - Fisher explores the relationship between desire and capitalism, and wonders what new forms of desire we might still excavate from the past, present, and future. From the emergence and failure of the counterculture in the 1970s to the continued development of his left-accelerationist line of thinking, this volume charts a tragically interrupted course for thinking about the raising of a new kind of consciousness, and the cultural and political implications of doing so.

Story
On Anarchism provides the reasoning behind Noam Chomsky's fearless lifelong questioning of the legitimacy of entrenched power. In these essays, Chomsky redeems one of the most maligned ideologies, anarchism, and places it at the foundation of his political thinking. Chomsky's anarchism is distinctly optimistic and egalitarian. Moreover, it is a living, evolving tradition that is situated in a historical lineage; Chomsky's anarchism emphasizes the power of collective, rather than individualist, action.

Story
In The Conquest of Bread, first published in 1892, Kropotkin set out his ideas on how his heightened idealism could work. It was all the more extraordinary because he was born into an aristocratic land-owning family - with some 1,200 male serfs - though from his student years his liberal views and his fixation on the need for social change saw him take a revolutionary path. This led rapidly to decades of exile. It is a passionate, even a fierce polemic for dramatic social change.

Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey are unquestionably two of the greatest epic masterpieces in Western literature. Though more than 2,700 years old, their stories of brave heroics, capricious gods, and towering human emotions are vividly timeless. The Iliad can justly be called the world’s greatest war epic. The terrible and long-drawn-out siege of Troy remains one of the classic campaigns. The Odyssey chronicles the many trials and adventures Odysseus must pass through on his long journey home from the Trojan wars to his beloved wife.

Story
How do politics shape our world, our lives, and our perceptions? How much of “common sense” is actually driven by the ruling class’ needs and interests? And how are we to challenge the capitalist structures that now threaten all life on the planet? Consequences of Capitalism exposes the deep, often unseen, connections between neoliberal “common sense” and structural power. In making these linkages, we see how the current hegemony keeps social justice movements divided and marginalized. And, most importantly, we see how we can fight to overcome these divisions.

Most people have heard of the Celts - the elusive, ancient tribal people who resided in present-day England, Ireland, Scotland and France. Paradoxically characterized as both barbaric and innocent, the Celts appeal to the modern world as a symbol of a bygone era, a world destroyed by the ambition of empire and the spread of Christianity throughout Western Europe. Despite the pervasive cultural and literary influence of the Celts, shockingly little is known of their way of life and beliefs, because very few records of their stories exist.

Blackshirts and Reds explores some of the big issues of our time: fascism, capitalism, communism, revolution, democracy, and ecology. These terms are often bandied about but seldom explored in the original and exciting way that has become Michael Parenti's trademark. Parenti shows how "rational fascism" renders service to capitalism, how corporate power undermines democracy, and how revolutions are a mass empowerment against the forces of exploitative privilege.

Story
Here, anthropologist David Graeber presents a stunning reversal of conventional wisdom: He shows that before there was money, there was debt. For more than 5,000 years, since the beginnings of the first agrarian empires, humans have used elaborate credit systems to buy and sell goods - that is, long before the invention of coins or cash. It is in this era, Graeber argues, that we also first encounter a society divided into debtors and creditors.

Publisher's summary
Anarchism claims that there's no need for a state and that it would be better to have a society without central government. Anarchists dislike the authority of the state, but the dream of the stateless society is not a simple matter.
The Anarchy & The Philosophy of Anarchism Collection includes:
Book one: The 1902 essay collection Mutual Aid: A Factor in Evolution by the Russian naturalist and anarchist philosopher Peter Kropotkin explores the role of mutually beneficial cooperation and reciprocity in the animal kingdom and human societies. It is an argument against theories of social Darwinism that emphasize competition and survival of the fittest and against the romantic views of writers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau who thought that cooperation was motivated by universal love.
Book two: The Conquest of Bread is an 1892 book by the Russian anarcho-communist Peter Kropotkin. It first appeared as a series of articles in the French anarchist journal Le Révolté. Kropotkin points out what he considers to be the defects of the economic systems of feudalism and capitalism and why he believes they thrive on and maintain poverty and scarcity.
Book three: An Appeal to the Young is a passionate tract by Peter Kropotkin that was translated from Russian in 1884 by HM Hyndman. The next year it was published in San Francisco with the title To Young People by the International Workingman’s Association (IWMA) in a translation by Marie LeCompte. The pamphlet is imbued with a fierce morality and by times earnest, scathing, condemnatory, and passionate.
Book four: Law and Authority, by Kropotkin, advocates a communist society free from central government. A classic statement of anarchist thought, it considers prisons as “schools of crime” and presents an anarchist critique of the law and the criminal justice system. The text is much easier to understand than for example the works of Bakunin, and the argument is clearly stated for easy digestion. Kropotkin's argument is hard to dispute despite it being so simple.
Book five: Anarchism and Other Essays is a 1910 collection of essays outlining Emma Goldman's anarchist views on various topics, most notably the oppression of women and perceived shortcomings of first-wave feminism. It also sets out her views on prisons, political violence, sexuality, religion, nationalism, and art theory for a fascinating look into revolutionary issues at the turn of the century.
Book six: My Further Disillusionment in Russia, in which Emma Goldman tells of her visit to Russia in 1919 where she witnessed the aftermath of the Revolution firsthand. Disgusted by the actions of the communist dictatorship, she left the country in 1921 and reported her eyewitness accounts in two books - My Disillusionment in Russia and My Further Disillusionment in Russia. She exposed the political harassment and forced labor inflicted on the people, the rampant opportunism in the Soviet government, the persecution of anarchists and others, and the government's use of deportation as a political weapon. She also describes the type of visitors who came to "study the Revolution". There were the naïve idealists, the journalists who were wined and dined by the communists and spread propaganda afterward, and a third type that became agents of the ruling party.

Based on seven years of ground-breaking research and hundreds of interviews, I Thought It Was Just Me shines a long-overdue light on an important truth: Our imperfections are what connect us to each other and to our humanity. On the face of it, a simple book of 26 poem fables sharing one man’s wisdom. But The Prophet is so much more than that. It has inspired people from John F Kennedy to The Beatles and became the '60s Bible of counterculture – all because of the timeless truths it shared. The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

The history of the tablets translated in the following book is strange and beyond the belief of modern scientists. Their antiquity is stupendous, dating back some 36,000 years. The writer is Thoth, an Atlantean Priest-King, who founded a colony in ancient Egypt after the sinking of the mother country. He was the builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza, erroneously attributed to Cheops. In it he incorporated his knowledge of the ancient wisdom and also securely secreted records and instruments of ancient Atlantis.

What is nature? What is humanity's place in nature? And what is the relationship of society to the natural world? In an era of ecological breakdown, answering these questions has become of momentous importance for our everyday lives and for the future that we and other life-forms face. In the essays of The Philosophy of Social Ecology, Murray Bookchin confronts these questions head on, invoking the ideas of mutualism, self-organization, and unity in diversity, in the service of ever-expanding freedom.

Parenti shows how "rational fascism" renders service to capitalism, how corporate power undermines democracy, and how revolutions are a mass empowerment against the forces of exploitative privilege.

This rather incoherent work by Russian anarchist philosopher Michael Bakunin is described in a way that he described his own life: a fragment. Rife with criticisms on Christianity and the technocracy, Bakunin presses communist values without fear of bordering extremism. Listening to this work is like walking through Bakunin’s disjointed mind; often cutting off and starting mid-sentence, including footnotes several paragraphs long as if his thoughts suddenly start to wander, as well as ending rather abruptly mid-sentence.

Story
Emma Goldman (1869 – 1940) was an anarchist political activist and writer. She played a pivotal role in the development of anarchist political philosophy in North America and Europe in the first half of the 20th century. In this essay, (1910) Goldman sets forth her interpretation of the ideology of anarchism. Like most anarchists, she was highly idealistic; believing that human nature was inherently good, she was convinced that a state of absolute freedom would maximize human happiness and productivity.

In this work, Emma Goldman writes that anarchism stands for the liberation of the human mind from the rule of religion, the liberation of the human body from the rule of property, and liberation from the shackles and restraints of government. She claims that anarchism stands for a social order based on the free grouping of individuals for the purpose of producing real social wealth, an order that will guarantee to every human being free access to the earth and full enjoyment of the necessities of life.

What do anarchists want? It seems easier to classify them by what they don't want, namely, the organizations of the State, and to identify them with rioting and protest rather than with any coherent ideology. But with demonstrations like those against the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund being blamed on anarchists, it is clear that an explanation of what they do stand for is long overdue. Colin Ward provides answers to these questions by considering anarchism from a variety of perspectives....

"Mutual Aid" Is Essential Reading/Listening
This is an uneven collection. However, the first and principal book, Peter Kropotkin's "Mutual Aid: A Factor in Evolution" is a near must-read. Although it is a work of natural history and anthropology, in some ways a bit like "The Origin of the Species," Kropotkin's classic is probably the closest thing we have to a good argument for anarchism as a reasonable political alternative. "Mutualism" is, of course, both a synonym and predecessor of "anarchism". The author employs deep scholarship and his extensive field research in various parts of the globe to show that mutual aid, without need for any formal government, is natural in humans throughout millennia. As for the rest of this hodgepodge volume, well, "uneven" may be crediting it too much. Some of Goldman's essays are quite good, others not. Kropotkin's other efforts are weak. But that should not deter listeners from ordering this volume in order to become acquainted with "Mutual Aid", which for all that it concerns observations from the natural world, gives us something far sturdier than idealism upon which to think that mutalism/anarchism might yet inform political debate. In these times of increasing autocracies and tyrannies throughout the world, Kropotkin details a more hopeful track in human history.
