Publisher's summary

No one looks kindly on the killer of a king.

After unwittingly helping her mother poison King Louis XIV, 17-year-old alchemist Mirabelle Monvoisin is forced to see her mother's Shadow Society in a horrifying new light: They're not heroes of the people, as they've always claimed to be, but murderers. She herself included. Mira tries to ease her guilt by brewing helpful curatives, but her hunger tonics and headache remedies cannot right past wrongs or save the dissenters whom her mother vows to purge.

Royal bastard Josse de Bourbon is more kitchen boy than fils de France. But when the Shadow Society assassinates the Sun King and half of the royal court, he must become the prince he was never meant to be in order to save his injured sisters and the petulant dauphin. Forced to hide in the sewers beneath the city, Josse's hope of reclaiming Paris seems impossible - until his path collides with Mirabelle's.

She's a deadly poisoner. He's a bastard prince. They are sworn enemies, yet they form a tenuous pact to unite the commoners and former nobility against the Shadow Society. But can a rebellion built on mistrust ever hope to succeed?

Definitely worth a listen!

It was a lot of fun!! I listened through it very quickly! It wasn't a big mystery, but it was adventurous and creative with rhe what if change in history.. super sweet too, even a little grit.. As some people commented, yes mirabell's voice actress could get little annoying at times, but we have to remember that they are only 18 or so thus their choices and behaviours reflect that. Jesse's actor was awesome though. I definitely recommend this one.

Good and would read another

I really liked this book. The narrators were amazing . Some issues that I have with the story is that some parts were predictable, the magic system was not fully explained, and Mirabelle is really irritating at times. That being said, if a sequel was released, I would totally read it

Story was great narration was terrible

The female narrator is overly dramatic / breathy and whiny to the point of being annoying- but the story was good enough that I finished the book

Good story

I started this because it was next in the suggested for you feed. The story was interesting. Magic in revolutionary France. I enjoyed the twists.

The Female narrator is very quiet so I needed to turn it up for her and down for him.

Delightful

A delightful listen. A twisting plot, so I never knew what was coming next. Narration was also good.

Very good

So, I’m very happy with this book. I’ve struggled to find anything decent that is over five hours on included. This was it. This is what I needed to find on Audible Included to really be satisfied with the service.
Even if I had to pay a credit (which I will because I want to hear this over and over again), I would definitely do that. This is a fantasy romance that is very, and I do mean very, light on history. Take it as an alternate dimension or just a fantasy with coincidentally a country called France and a King Louis. The characters are well written, I actually really liked the narrator, the story makes sense and doesn’t have any huge plot holes that make you angry at the characters for doing something stupid. It’s really good.

Almost didn't get through it

The story was good but the narration was a bit annoying. The male narrator made it difficult to get through the book. When he tried to change his voice to narrate different characters they sound raspy and stupid. The female narrators voice was a bit too breathy and dramatic but she could have done the whole book and it would have been better. The only thing about the story that drove me crazy was how nieve mirabelle was. At times it boarded on pathetic but other than that it was a good story.

liked but not loved

the historical retelling was beautiful but maribell was a weak female lead and at times frustrating. she was more whinning and doubtful then i would have expected. she was the reason i wanted to stop listening. im happy i powered through then the overall plot and story was masterful. i can't wait to read more from this author, just hope her femalw leads in other books are actually leaders.

I downloaded this on a whim and was not disappointed. The story was phenomenal and the narrators were excellent. Would definitely recommend.
