The superhero comic books that Marvel Comics has published since 1961 are, as Douglas Wolk notes, the longest continuous, self-contained work of fiction ever created: over half a million pages to date, and still growing. The Marvel story is a gigantic mountain smack in the middle of contemporary culture. Thousands of writers and artists have contributed to it. Everyone recognizes its protagonists: Spider-Man, the Avengers, the X-Men. Eighteen of the hundred highest-grossing movies of all time are based on parts of it. Inspired me to read comics again…

Loved this…deep and thoughtful with insight into the Marvel stories I had not thought about in a long time. This is a fantastic book to understand the story woven by Marvel and all that this can teach us about ourselves.

Flat out AWESOME!

I absolutely loved this book. What a great listen. The writer/narrator is truly passionate about comic books and all things Marvel. When it ended, I really wanted more. As a huge comic book fan myself, I loved getting lost in the Marvel story. This author needs a podcast to keep telling Marvel history as it unfolds.

A great and intriguing listen!

While slow to start, once “All The Marvels” start rolling? Our Author/Narrator drops some serious knowledge on the table, and passes it around. I loved this book and will definitely listen again at some point 👍👍

Highly Recommended if you are, like me, interested in the mysteries and complexity of Comic Book Culture.

Not exhaustive in its scope, but fun.

left many, many, long and interesting story arcs merely skimned over (Winter Soldier, Secret Empire) with a deep examination of more modern characters (Kamala Kaun, Squirrel girl) I still enjoyed it thoroughly. Been reading comics since 1972 and highly recommend to any longtime reader. Casual MCU fans might find it a bit tedious.

I only wish there was more!

great book! wish it was longer

absolutely love this book deeply, but the way the narrator pronounces Xavier as "Zavier" instead of the obvious "Ecks-avier" baffled and annoyed me

Interesting but flawed book

I was disappointed that the offer that only made a few historical mistakes but also reshape things that were his opinion into fact. I wish he would have added in my opinion and I think this is. Far too to often with projects like this they don’t seek out to talk to any of the original creators involved and put in their own narratives to finish how they think or why they think things happened. One of the biggest most clearing mistakes was the referance to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles having anything to do with being based on the X-Men. Having consumed many historical books on history of comics the author misses quite a few historical information and accidentally uses rumors and misinformation fact. When the author sticks to his experience reading the books and what he got from them without a narrative of his opinion it is a very interesting book however because of the Misses there are moments that I just don’t trust. I think this is a good book to go into understanding this is based on more of opinion and him reading books versus actually talking to the creators behind the books going to Comic Con‘s and having conversations. He also would’ve benefited from reading at least six history books about Comics and watching some Comic Con panels were some of these things where debunked. I would still suggest getting this book as it does have value.

Loving Review of the Marvel Comics Legacy

Wolk skillfully mixes his love of Marvel with insightful commentary. I took his advice in the first chapters and skipped around as a saw fit. I also am itching to dive into some comics now!

The criticisms here that the book is “too political” are ridiculous. Any cultural critic would address the obvious shifts over time in who writes and who is represented in comics. The book is actually, in my opinion, very mild on those topics.

So, don’t be afraid! Dive in. It’s a blast!

Sometimes the author isn’t the best narrator, but I thought Wolk’s delivery was quite good.
