Publisher's summary

This program includes three bonus interviews with the author.

The world's leading expert on near-death experiences reveals his journey toward rethinking the nature of death, life, and the continuity of consciousness.

Cases of remarkable experiences on the threshold of death have been reported since ancient times, and are described today by 10% of people whose hearts stop. The medical world has generally ignored these “near-death experiences”, dismissing them as “tricks of the brain” or wishful thinking. But after his patients started describing events that he could not just sweep under the rug, Dr. Bruce Greyson began to investigate.

As a physician without a religious belief system, he approached near-death experiences from a scientific perspective. In After, he shares the transformative lessons he has learned over four decades of research. Our culture has tended to view dying as the end of our consciousness, the end of our existence - a dreaded prospect that for many people evokes fear and anxiety.

But Dr. Greyson shows how scientific revelations about the dying process can support an alternative theory. Dying could be the threshold between one form of consciousness and another, not an ending but a transition. This new perspective on the nature of death can transform the fear of dying that pervades our culture into a healthy view of it as one more milestone in the course of our lives. After challenges us to open our minds to these experiences and to what they can teach us, and in so doing, expand our understanding of consciousness and of what it means to be human.

Featured Article: Comforting Audiobooks About Grief and Loss That Actually Help

When it comes to the death of a loved one, there is no easy path forward. Grieving can place significant mental strain on those who are mourning. And because everyone grieves a little differently, it can be hard to know where to turn for help, or what to say to someone who is in the throes of grief. Audiobooks on grief can offer insight to those looking for ways to support the mourning, or a bit of comfort for anyone struggling with loss themselves.

Possibly the best NDE book I have ever read

Awesome, informative, great NDE shares. I will read again, it's so packed with knowledge, it's worth a second read.

Excellent Information on NDE

I read some of the reviews that shared that this was too science focused and not really helpful on NDE. I have read much on NDE since my early twenties and much of it from individuals having had NDE's. What I appreciate about this particular book is the thoroughness and research the author, Bruce Greyson put into the study of this topic. It is, in my opinion, better than one single persons narrative. This is a collection of personal narratives and then an extension on what science is learning on this topic.
Narration was great, I did not find myself irritated or having to get used to the voice. I really enjoyed listening to the end interviews with different NDEs who are out in the world sharing on this topic. It was like a piece of additional listening completely unexpected.

Worth every second!

This book is so worth listening to and more than once. Even the scientific aspects are presented in such a logical and succinct way. It is narrated beautifully. I have always feared death, but this book definitely takes that fear and diminishes it. I will listen to it again and again, I’m sure.

Great book by Dr Bruce Greyson

Science is fascinating in so many ways but it never tried to introspect the mind , consciousness, beginning or the end(death). Dr Greyson’s book in every aspect is a must read and it will bring lot of wisdom and hopefully the scientific communities shall focus more of their attention to the study of consciousness and death. Great book and great narrative. Thank you Dr.

A "Standout" book among books....

this book is a standout book among other books about near-death experiences. it was written by one of the leading researchers about near death experiences and it had new information that I had never heard before - even after reading many many books. So if you're interested about near death experiences I highly recommend this be one among your library.

A different perspective

Enjoyed the book and the narrator. Explores the scientific aspects of NDE.
I lost a son and looking for confirmation on what might be possible after death. This book is worth listening to!

Informative

I liked the scientific approach to a hard to research reality. It was a balanced, unbiased account of near death experience. The sample size was large, and Greyson was able to bring together some common factors in the experiences.

Dr Greysons magnum opus

this work shows that there is so much more to Consciousness than brain activity. in fact the trend seems to be the less brain activity the more the experiencer experiences.

extreme anxiety turned into hope

I thought this book was fantastic... after my early 20s, I developed a significant fear of death. So, naturally, I avoided the subject.
Then my charming, silly and dearest grandfather died 3 weeks ago and I want to know that he is in a better place. I need to know.
This book did not 100% confirm an afterlife... but it greatly reduced my anxiety around death and it gave me hope that our death may actually lead to a new, better type of existence and that my grandfather is hopefully in that existence now.

The performance was great too. the narrator's voice is pleasant and he reads the book as if he is very interested in the topic but has a healthy dose of skepticism.
