Publisher's summary

A surprising gift brings closure for an elderly widow in a poignant story about grief, memory, and the persistence of love by the acclaimed, award-winning author of Miracle Creek.

Korean immigrant Mina Pak Johnson is clearing out the last of her husband’s things when she finds a picnic basket in his closet—a long-forgotten wedding present from her mother. With it comes decades of memories—of her mother’s wishes for her to be happy and her own shattered hopes for her first child—and regret at never having used it. Pushing her husband’s ashes and a bottle of wine in a rusty old stroller, Mina is determined to re-create the picnic they never had. But with it comes something Mina never expected, illuminating a loving gesture her husband made years ago.

Angie Kim’s A Planned Occasion is part of Good Intentions, a riveting collection of stories about the instincts, fears, and fierce love inherent in motherhood from award-winning, bestselling authors. Read or listen to each in a single sitting.

Don't Save It for a Special Occasion

A long happy marriage with the ups and downs. A gentle reminder to just use the good dishes, wear the red lipstick, don't save it for a "special occasion" because life will get in the way.

Lovely story❤️

Sometimes a short story can really pack an emotional punch. This is one of those stories. It isn’t about plot, it’s about a marriage. Lovely prose and perfect narration.

A moving tale of loss, grief regret and memoryies.

A moving tale of a widow’s loss, her attempt to assuage her guilt and rectify the wrong she caused him early on in their marriage.

Mina Pak Johnson, is moving from her marital home to a facility for senior citizens. While emptying her closets she comes across a wedding gift they received from her mother all those years ago. With it comes the memories of her mother and her concern that Mina, who is Korean, was marrying an American. She further discovers a decades old gift from her late husband, one that she blindly refused at the time.

A beautiful short story of love, loss, grief and memory. Angie Kim is the author of Miracle Creek and Happiness Falls.

A good read

My heart ached for this widow who finds an old picnic basket that reveals a secret from her past. It is story about a mother's love and acceptance but it is also about a long happy marriage that still had secrets to reveal. How many have experienced this "putting off until time was right"? A story about lesson learned! A good read, enjoy!
