Publisher's summary

In the wild lands of Norway, Hunlaf must quell a vicious slave uprising in Matthew Harffy's latest historical adventure.

A wild land. A lethal fanatic. A violent revolt.

Northumbria, AD 794.

Those who rule the seas, rule the land. None know the truth of this more than the Vikings. To compete with the violent sea-faring raiders, the king of Northumbria orders the construction of his own longships under the command of oath-sworn Norseman, Runolf.

When the Northern sea wolves attack for the second year, the king sends cleric turned warrior, Hunlaf, on a mission across the Whale Road to persuade the king of Rogaland into an alliance. But Runolf and Hunlaf have other plans: old scores to settle, kin to seek out and a heretical tome to find in the wild lands of the Norse.

Their voyage takes them into the centre of a violent uprising. A slave has broken free of his captors and with religious fervour, he is leading his fanatical followers on a rampage—burning all in his path.

Hunlaf must brave the Norse wilderness, and overcome deadly foes to stop this madman. To fail would see too many die....

A true story teller

Very happy I chose to start this series. Wonderfully written characters, painted the landscape with words the world they lived in .Have purchased the 3rd book and when finished that will start Mr Harffy’s Bernicia series which is happily 9 volumes long. I am listening to these books on Audio and am grateful that Barnaby Edward’s is the narrator for both series,he adds to the quality of these stories. Thank You.

Solid Medieval Fun!

So good, I don’t know if I want him to write and release the third book or the next Beobrand book first!

Another Gripping Series

Already a fan of this author and narrator combination, I started this series with little reservation. In the second book of the series, Hunlaf is a young warrior who travels North with his crew in search of kin taken in the Viking raid. Not knowing their fate they face the horror of the brutal enemy. In his old age, Hunlaf records his story but the fate of his friends keeps the reader engaged. I look forward to Book 3.

Fun if unrealistic story

Beautifully read interesting if unrealistic story. Very gory, but typical of the genre. Interesting to see what happens next.

Superb book

I recommend this book and all of Matthews other books highly. I strongly suggest You start with A time for swords the predecessor to this book.
Matthew does a superb job of spinning a tale from his imagination and creating excellent characters
with individual personalities. Barnaby Edwards absolutely superb job of bringing the hole thing to life.

Good stuff

Good read. Would recommend to friend. I did not seem like an unreasonable new change on a timeline I’ve read before.

Thriller

Matthew Harffy book is so well wrote that it draws you into the story and makes it so hard to put down. The story line and characters are so interesting and I felt as of I could picture them standing before me. This is a must read.

While I Felt Lukewarm On The First Book…

I’m glad I stuck around.

This book feels like a massive improvement on every front. The story, characters, and setting feel much more alive, and Hunlaf definitely is much more likable here than in the preceding book. Even the narrator (though I still have some issues) does a much better job.

I’m so glad I can say that I can’t wait for book three!
