Publisher's summary

"A deliciously twisted gothic fantasy you'll want to read again and again, with characters you'll adore, prose that'll spellbind you, romance you'll swoon over, and a mystery that'll keep you guessing until the last stunning twist."
—Diana Urban, author of
These Deadly Games

From the author of Sing Me Forgotten comes a lush new fantasy novel with art-based magic, romance, and murder…

Myra has a gift many would kidnap, blackmail, and worse to control: she’s a portrait artist whose paintings alter people’s bodies. Guarding that secret is the only way to keep her younger sister safe now that their parents are gone. But one frigid night, the governor’s wife discovers the truth and threatens to expose Myra if she does not complete a special portrait that would resurrect the governor's dead son.

Once she arrives at the legendary stone mansion, however, it becomes clear the boy’s death was no accident. A killer stalks these halls--one disturbingly obsessed with portrait magic. Desperate to get out of the manor as quickly as possible, Myra turns to the governor’s older son for help completing the painting before the secret she spent her life concealing makes her the killer’s next victim.

“A heady blend of the fantastical, the murderous, and the romantic.” —Kirkus Reviews, STARRED review

“Marvelously magical and steeping with mystery.” —Adalyn Grace, author of All the Stars and Teeth

loved it ☺️

saw an ad on Facebook for this and waited a month for it to come out. I truly enjoyed the story and loved the twist at the end. Also I found that having art as a power a refreshing aspect that I haven't read about before and gave the story a creative feel. I really hope that there will be a second one

It was okay!

It was a nice read to listen to while working, but it’s not something I was overly excited to even listen to. The romance was rather obvious, and almost an ‘insta-love’ feel. I feel like there were certain things left unanswered or not explained.

A very emotional read

I love love Billie Fulford-Brown’s work. She makes even the blandest of desserts taste like the most wonderful one. She pours so much emotion into every scene, detail and character I always fall in love. This is a very original and unique concept, set in a very beautiful world. The story is very interesting and has enough twists and turns not to get boring. I throughly enjoyed my first Jessica S.Olson’s book and I am excited for what the author has in store.

Ok

Like the plot twist, the fact that she would give the co-protagonist a second change and the love between the sisters but in the other hand the it took me a long time to get into the book and I really just finished it because I was way too in deep.

Pretty Good

I like this story. It’s original and very interesting. I feel like it could have been better, though I cant articulate how. For one thing, it was too long. Some scenes were just too detailed and drawn out. I found the relationship between August and Myra to be a bit too insta-lovey. The performance was very good. I don’t think it’s necessarily worth a credit, but I bought it on sale and feel it was a good value.

Very Enjoyable

I really enjoyed this story! I loved Lucy and Myra’s relationship, and I liked the mystery surrounding everything with Will. The religion of the world was very interesting as well. And, I have to be honest, Vincent was a particular favorite.

Here’s hoping there’s a sequel, since the ending does set one up, and I would love to see more of this world and these characters!
