Publisher's summary

Do you understand Canada’s complex and intricate history? Are you looking for a compact, concise, and all-encompassing summary of the world’s second-largest country by total area?

Canada is a land renowned for its stunning beauty and abundant natural resources but is rarely considered to have a particularly captivating history. Its people, stereotyped as polite and friendly, are seldom viewed as they are: the products of an intricate and complex struggle. Yet in truth, Canada and its people are the results of centuries of cultural collisions, compromises, and collaborations.

From the footsteps of the first humans on the North American continent, Canada has grown and prospered thanks to the continual crossroads of empires that have marked the land from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

In A Brief History of Canada, you will discover how a rancorous European rivalry drove settlers to the rocky Canadian shoreline and into the diverse and multi-layered world of the First Nations and Inuit. Follow the French fur trader through the Great Lakes, meet the Métis on the Canadian prairies, and bear witness to the juggernaut of the British Empire. Learn why Canada is much more than meets the eye.

A fantastic book On canadian History

This is a must-read for anyone interested in Canadian history and its society. As the author mentions during the audiobook, to understand current Canada, it is important to understand its complicated history. All French and English colons have significantly impacted indigenous communities and Canada. This audiobook explains it with lots of details and valuable information. I immigrated to Canada a few years ago; I would have loved to listen to this audiobook to understand why the country is the way it is today. The author gives an easy-to-follow summary of Canada's history, making it very interesting and informative. In my opinion, this is a must-read.

New Appreciation for Northern Neighbors

I was absolutely enthralled with this book! I loved learning now Canada evolved into the country we know today and was especially captivated by all the information about the indigenous tribes! My favorite part of the book was about the War of 1812. Even though this is considered the "war that nobody won," it really was such an incredible turning point in terms of Britain's lost hold on the colonies, American self-protection and the development of Canada's identity. The picture of Canadian strength at this point in history is simply inspiring! I truly admire how this country has become one nation and yet continues to support such distinct cultures within its boarders. Haynes did a fantastic job of making history come to life in this book, I am excited to listen to more in his "Brief History Of" series! Well done!

Historical and educational!

My partner and I are planning a trip to Canadian and wanted to educate ourselves a little before we took off. Usually I get stuck into a travel book, however, this time I thought I’d try a different approach. So glad I did! There was so much interesting gold here, from the Inuits, to the british, to the fur trading through the lakes. Highly recommended.

Excellent Summary!

This audiobook tells the complex and beautiful history of Canada and really brings the story to life! Narration is excellent. Covers its relations with Britain and France as well its unfavorable treatment of indigenous peoples.

After this listen, I'm inspired to visit Canada and see this beautiful country for myself because I have a higher appreciation for it - Highly Recommend!

So much I didn't know about Canada!!

This book is quite interesting .. Our neighbors to the north are not just SUPER NICE (the stereotype is real from my experience!!) but they also have an enticing history. What I found most festinating is how the early tribes settled and then later had to deal with Norse and European nations. This is all happening in a cold (mostly Tundra) chunk of the American continent, mind you.

It makes sense that the fur trade was so essential for the course history would take.

Overall ,I found this book to be super enjoyable and I learned a ton of cool stuff about Canada!
