Publisher's summary

Lad from the streets meets lord of the manor. Both men's lives will be changed forever.

When Sir Alan Watleigh goes searching for sex, he never imagines the street rat he brings home for one last bit of pleasure in his darkest hour will be the man who hauls him back from the edge of the grave. Despite his harsh life in the slums of London, Jem is a bright, cheerful young man. He's also witty, irreverent, glib, and makes Alan laugh - a rare occasion since wartime trauma and the death of his family have made the man a ghost of his former self.

A single night of meaningless sex turns into an offer of permanent employment. Jem acts as Alan's valet, but offers him so much more than polished boots and starched cravats. Just as the men are adjusting to their new living arrangement, news about a former soldier under his command sends Sir Watleigh and Jem on the road to save a child in danger.

The journey brings them closer together as they travel from lust toward love. They rescue the girl from the clutches of an insane surgeon, who is as interested in experimenting on the vulnerable human spirit as he is on physical bodies. Alan realizes his love for Jem when he nearly loses him, but is Alan's love strong enough to risk society discovering the truth about him? And is he strong enough to finally accept his sexual nature?

Can't get into this

I just can't get into this. This is just boring to me. It started off good..but the slow drawl of the narrator just didn't do it for me. He tried too hard to may it fit the period. Then it got boring and I just stopped.

So dull even the steamy scenes are a bore.

This story sounded so interesting, and the first few scenes are. Unfortunately, it plummets immediately into a dull illogical plot with zero interesting scenes. I could ignore the nonsense plot chasing after some mad doctor if the character development drove the story, but it doesn't. The flat characters never develop anything beyond TV Tropes personalities. The love story... well, the book sure insisted they are falling in love in the narration, but we never see it. The narrator jointly lacks emotional delivery while overdoing voice acting to the point of embarrassment. Even the steamy scenes are boring and full of clunky words and wattpad-esque formulas for writing the act. Is there anything good in this book?

Jem is a caricature of a street rat, literally referred to as a gutter boy at one point--which moght have been charming if Alan weren't, as usual, literally looking down on Jem. He quite literally never stops viewing Jem as lesser than for being low class. If you think Jem ever becomes anything other than a cartoonish Oliver Twist extra who mistakenly wandered into a gay romance novel, guess again. I was furious that a character who deserves depth and development so much never got it. To make matters worse, the narrator plays Jem with a painfully exaggerated low class accent, which starts to feel almost offensive after a few chapters. He struggles with the accent so badly that he's unable to put any emotion into the words except one tone: mirth. It makes sense while Jem is playing jester, but in every other moment, it undermines the impact of the story. In one scene, Jem is meant to comfort his lover with soft words, and narrator continues with that jester-like joking tone. This happens over and over. It's beyond frustrating.

The narration issue extends beyond Jem. At one point, a character is described as having a "smooth and calm" tone--the narrator SNAPPED and SNEERED out the dialogue. Nonsense. Wet mouth noises he makes between words are somehow not cut from the audio file. And he narrates things in Jem's voice while in Jem's POV, and in Alan's voice while in Alan's POV--but not consistently. Sometimes he uses Alan's voice for Jem's POV narration. It's completely sloppy and irritating.

Alan, just like Jem, deserved to have depth, and he never got it. I was disappointed because he had some serious mental health issues introduced in the first few chapters. These topics deserve care when writing about them, and it would have been refreshing and meaningful to see those topics dealt with appropriately. Instead the issue is essentially dropped beyond a few mentions in passing because Alan got his c*ck sucked. Ok. WTF? I was so disappointed in the author for setting up something potentially meaningful and then failing to follow through so horribly.

There's no pay off to listening to this dull affair. Find something else.

Such Heart-swelling Romance💝

This story has everything!
A brooding, principled, handsome hero who struggles with his wounds and needs.
A delicious, unfettered young man who's wit and beauty barely disguise his wisdom and depth of character.
A sadistic and perverse villain who is in possession of a little girl needing rescuing.
And a lot of ROMANCE with very EROTIC love scenes!

This is a beautifully written love story. It would make any reader sigh with giddiness by the end. It is, obviously, a gay romance. But I wish it were listed next to all the other Historical Romances. More people need to hear it.
Yay for love!!

Other reviewers may not have liked the narrator, but I enjoyed him very much.

Delightful and Unexpected

I really enjoyed this sweet story. It is a MM historical story similar to Brook St Thief. The relationship that builds between the MCs is realistic and endearing. Both MCs try to be find their own self worth in the love of the other. The narrator does a fantastic job.

Could've been flawless if not for a few missteps

I liked the story, but felt there were a few easily avoidable errors. First, I did not enjoy the way Alan hurt Jem twice. I get that he was initially very classist, and saw Jem through that lens, but Jem was too forgiving. I hated those parts of the book. I also did not appreciate the way they used terms 'female' and 'male' to describe sexual positions. This shows that the book was not written by a gay man, as we do not use those terms. Very heteronormative. The narration was ok. I hated how he said 'cock' though. God, I really disliked the focus on male anatomy.

Inconsistent voice acting

The constant switching between character voices for narrated bits was confusing. Sometimes it would take me a whole passage to realize a character hadn't been speaking out loud. Also, the bits w the villain were just too off-putting. I was already having trouble getting into the romantic scenes due to awkward wording & then having the surgeon go into detail about his intentions toward a young child just ruined the rest of this, for me.

Decent story, disliked the narration

I wanted to like this; the story beneath the romance is interesting, and the characters are complex. The narrator ruined it for me, though. The accent he used for Jem was awful and hard to understand. I've enjoyed other novels by this duo, and I might have given this a re-listen if not for the narration!

Phenomenal story

Complex characters, legitimately scary villain, the plot flows and makes sense and we get our HAE after a harrowing ordeal.
My only complaint is the narrator. It wasn’t a terrible job by any means, but the voice of Jem is played as always in jest. The character definitely has a playful demeanor and way he approaches the world, but there’s a lot of opportunity for the character to be serious in specific moments or conversations. Often throughout the story the narrator would say something as Jem and and I would hear the words and feel like the way they were said did not make sense in context. Several times in the story I would think, ‘no, the character wouldn’t say it like THAT… this makes more sense’ et cetera. It makes me want to read the book itself tbh

Such a great listen

I loved this book! It was such a joy and surprisingly at times, even had me on the edge of my seat. The narrator did a great job on giving you a sense for each character and setting the moods of each scene. Totally recommend!

Solid tale, enjoyable

I liked this one. The characters had personalities and were allowed to grow. Their personal relationship bumps up against societal strictures, but I loved where they ended up.
