Publisher's summary

From New York Times best-selling author Susan Wilson comes What a Dog Knows, another heartwarming novel about humans and the dogs that change our lives.

Ruby Heartwood has always lived a life on the move. As a traveling psychic, she makes her living working at carnivals and festivals and circuses around New England. It's a life Ruby has made peace with - settling in one place has never been for her. She needs no one, and no one needs her.

Until one night, when she is camped by the side of the road in her trusty Volkswagon "Westie" van, a fierce thunder and lightning storm erupts. In the middle of the downpour, she hears a distinct voice telling her to "let me in." In jumps a little black and white dog, and to Ruby's astonishment, she can hear the dog's thoughts. Has she been struck by lightning? Did the storm do this? Is she losing her mind?

It turns out, Ruby can hear many dogs' thoughts. She decides to set up semi-permanent residency in the town of Harmony Farms, until she can sort out what is going on, and who the little dog, Hitch, belongs to. But some people in Harmony Farms don't want her there. And it seems that events keep preventing Ruby from leaving. What secrets is this town keeping? Why was she meant to find this dog? And what has Ruby really been running from, all these years?

Addicted to this story

Maybe because Ms Wilson covered subjects that have always interested me: Dogs (of course!), the supernatural, small towns and both animal and human psychology but this one grabbed me and held on tight! There was so much in this book to hold onto. The characters were detailed just enough so you thought you knew them. As for the prime character, Ruby, her past experiences came in dribbles and drabs--not frustratingly but you knew there was still more to know about her which added to my addiction. I am already looking over other novels Ms Wilson has written. Can't wait for my next listen by this talented writer!

Christina Delaine, the narrator, did an absolutely perfect voice for all the characters and her talent also contributed greatly toward my being entranced with all of it.

I am and very very picky listener and I was much surprised that I loved this book so much. There were surprises I hadn't expected and actions I didn't see coming. Love that!

Another book by Ms Wilson that I loved was "The Dog I Loved" which was down to earth yet still touched my heart. Recommended too!

Highly recommend this book. If you love animals and he supernatural, you will love this book. I guarantee!

Awesome

Wish it was a series! Narrator is great, but was reading a bit slow, I sped it up to 1.2 and it was perfect.

Very enjoyable book

I loved the story, even though I am not a big fan of psychic anything. But I love dogs. Good story line, good resolution. The reader was very good, but her voice is so ... NASAL ... that it could be distracting. She could use a medicine for sinus issues before reading.

Loved this story!

This was a fun read. I truly enjoyed listening to the thoughts and voices of the dogs. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could really hear our dogs speak. The cast of characters were were also very likable.

The best book I've listened to in a long time!

I love long books because I get so involved that I don't want the story to end. Getting lost in the character's lives makes me want the story to continue. Susan Wilson's books are certainly on the top of the list when it comes to that feeling. So, this longer story fulfills that need. Of course, an animal, especially a dog, makes it better. A dog who communicates is even better yet! Psychic powers also intrigue me, so this book called to me so much that I listened to it in one day with a short nap before the ending. So, if animals and psychic intuition intrigue you, you won't be disappointed. Spoiler alert! No animals die!

Another Winner

There have been many stories written about children in search of their biological mothers. But this one had a great psychic twist that was not only entertaining but interesting - especially in the area of animal communication. And I always appreciate Wilson's excellent canine perspective in so many of her books. Being a dog person, that makes them extra special. Christina Delaine is more than a reader. She really brings the characters to life.
