An inclusive take on a magic school
Delightful and light, the Marvellers will seem very reminiscent of Potter to longtime fans, from themes to situations and writing style, but with new welcome twists of being very aware of its multicultural audience. Ella, the main character, struggles with challenges of integration into longstanding institutions, and this book has an interesting take on African American folk magic. Perfect for Potter fans wanting something new and more inclusive.

Storytelling with a sprinkle of truth
I absolutely loved the fantastic world of the Marvellers. The author did a great job of sprinkling in bits of truth about African-American history, while not making the real history stand out from the fantastic story.

Read this book!!!
**4.5** I already can’t wait for book 2!!! Such a whimsical setting, very Harry Potter-esque, but a more refreshing take on magical schools. Ella Durand is such a wonderful main character, and the side characters are super lovable. We love a grumpy gal bestie. There are enough questions that make you want the second book in your hands ASAP, but also enough answers that made the ending of this one pretty satisfying. The perfect concoction!
