Publisher's summary

Retired detective Konrad returns to a haunting cold case in The Darkness Knows by Arnaldur Indridason, the "undisputed King of the Icelandic thriller." (The Guardian, UK)

A frozen body is discovered in the icy depths of Langjökull glacier, apparently that of a businessman who disappeared 30 years before. At the time, an extensive search and police investigation yielded no results - one of the missing man’s business associates was briefly held in custody, but there wasn’t enough evidence to charge him.

Now the associate is arrested again and Konrad, the retired policeman who originally investigated the disappearance, is called back to reopen the case that has weighed on his mind for decades.

When a woman approaches him with new information that she obtained from her deceased brother, progress can finally be made in solving this long-cold case.

In The Darkness Knows, the master of Icelandic crime writing reunites listeners with Konrad, the unforgettable retired detective from The Shadow District. This is a powerful and haunting story about the poisonous secrets and cruel truths that time eventually uncovers.

Arnaldur once again shows he is a master of noir

This is a dark, well woven tale. A welcome, unexpected and warm last chapter., a small light in the darkness.

This is a nice little mystery. Not noir.
Kind of a locked room puzzler. For me it was slow without even moments of
shivers or yikes.

subtle and intricate police story

This book is quiet and requires patient listening, but is whole and satisfying. It feels as real and strange as life.

Excellent Mystery

I have enjoyed all of this author's books and this one is no exception! I am waiting for the next book in this series.

Formost the narration

This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and listened to this narrator. Both had me hooked right from the very beginning. the book was extremely well written, and the narration was beyond comparison.

Who’s bright idea was it to change the narrator?

Indridason is a wonderful writer and I have thoroughly enjoyed every one of his novels, all narrated by George Guidall. Is there really anyone on the planet who wants different narrators in a series of books? So disappointing. It has nothing to do with Mr. Barrett’s performance or English accent, only it’s not George Guidall. This book feels nothing like the previous Shadow District books. Every one of Indridason’s books is narrated by Guidall, and he set the perfect tone for this author and subject matter…why change now? Again, so disappointing, it totally blows the Shadow District series.

Poor audio

Audio was very poor at times. Made focusing very difficult. I kept losing track and had to come back often.

Snow and ice

I like Scandinavian mysteries particularly because of their oddball characters and the snow and ice. I have childhood memories and genetic memories of snow and ice. I am second generation Norwegian American.

A Heavy Story

Interesting but too esoteric. Quite cumbersome. On the other hand, there we’re touching personal sad stories for characters who are otherwise not socially sympathetic. Society rarely recognizes the feelings of the underclasses when tragedy hits.

The narrator, Mr.Barrett, has a fine, resonant style!

However, I did find the “ character voices “ for some in the story over- done and difficult to understand at times!! Mr. Barrett is a fine Actor but the low-register vocalizations of some characters tends to disrupt the “ flow” of the narrative! Thank you for allowing me to comment!
