Publisher's summary

A continuation of USA Today best-selling author Leonard Goldberg's Daughter of Sherlock Holmes series, The Abduction of Pretty Penny finds Joanna and the Watsons on the tail of an infamous killer.

Joanna and the Watsons are called in by the Whitechapel Playhouse to find Pretty Penny, a lovely, young actress who has gone missing without reason or notice. While on their search, the trio is asked by Scotland Yard to join in the hunt for a vicious murderer whose method resembles that of Jack the Ripper. It soon becomes clear that the Ripper has reemerged after a 28-year absence and is once again murdering young prostitutes in Whitechapel.

Following a line of subtle clues, Joanna quickly reasons that Pretty Penny has been taken capture by the killer. But as Joanna moves closer to learning his true identity, the killer sends her a letter indicating her young son, Johnny, will be the next victim to die. Time is running out, and Joanna has no choice but to devise a most dangerous plan that will bring her face-to-face with the killer. It is the only chance to protect her son and rescue Pretty Penny, and save both from an agonizing death.

The Abduction of Pretty Penny is a wonderful new entry in a series that the Historical Novel Society calls “one of the best Sherlock Holmes series since Laurie R. King’s Mary Russell books".

Tiresome

I normally enjoy a ‘Sherlock Holmes’ story but in this one some of the tropes grew tiresome, Joanna dragging out her ‘rightness’ and the men all being incredibly dim, and then for the story to be pretty anticlimactic in the end. Not my favorite of the series.

Steve west is superb as always.

I love the authors, use of deliberate repetition of certain elements to the story ….in this case, it’s engaging for me because it is so well done, and it is a natural way of speaking when one is talking or debating subjects with the same people over days or weeks.
In this case with Joanna and Jonny, Dr. Watson and Jon, their conversation is wonderfully witty, and the authors description of each characters, physical personality within conversations is seamless and complete …. Complete in such a way that I don’t notice it but I’m there in the room with the smell and lighting of a room and a character able to picture a smirk or a furrowed brow.
I think the author is well matched with Steve West and they complement each other wonderfully.

This series is one Sir Doyle might well enjoy.

IStands Tall Among the Best

This author's writing is a favorite past time and leisure activity for me. I found him by accident, but he is one of the best discoveries that I have made. The first title in this series was a gift but I was so captivated by the story and his style, that I broke my own rule and started buying the other books in the series.
For me, this audiobook excelled in all rating categories. I look forward to listening to more of his work and I would gladly recommend it to anyone.

Not a cozy mystery, too graphic

Loved the narrator Steve West! I didn't expect the graphic descriptions of the victims and certainly had to fast forward 30 seconds at a time when they went on and on and on. Other things that annoyed me were the use of the same phrases like "a thin smile on her lips", and Joanne's frequent putting down of her hubby, and how she was always spot on in an unbelievable way for almost everything. It was very heavy on the Jack the Ripper, yes, that was in the description of the book - but it played an overwhelming part in it which became the actual mystery shadowing the missing Penny.
I gave 3 stars (wanted to give only 1) b/c I didn't want my dislike for subject matter to completely take away from an unbiased review.

Mystery Maven

Really enjoy this series. Another great story with excellent narration. The ending was different but fit in with the story line. Recommend and awaiting the next entry.

Great

This has been one of my favorite of the series. Of course not the murders but the entangled web created and the resolution

As always great narrative and storyline!

Intriguing listen

I enjoyed this book and the spin on Jack the Ripper. I like when her son gets involved as well, it shows the daughter of Sherlock Holmes has emotion unlike her father.
