Publisher's summary

"The iconic stage director, writer, actor, and founder of The Manhattan Project, a 1960s-70s avant-garde theater company, delivers smart, clever observations with an actor's perfect timing. From harsh beginnings - never sentimentalized - to a series of adventures - sometimes funny, sometimes not - listening to Gregory is pure delight." (AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award winner)

The autobiography-of-sorts of André Gregory, an iconic figure in American theater and the star of My Dinner with André

This Is Not My Memoir tells the life story of André Gregory, iconic theatre director, writer, and actor. For the first time, Gregory shares memories from a life lived for art, including stories from the making of My Dinner with André. Taking on the dizzying, wondrous nature of a fever dream, This Is Not My Memoir includes fantastic and fantastical stories that take the listener from wartime Paris to golden-age Hollywood, from avant-garde theaters to monasteries in India. Along the way we meet Jerzy Grotowski, Helene Weigel, Gregory Peck, Gurumayi Chidvilasananda, Wallace Shawn, and many other larger-than-life personalities.

This Is Not My Memoir is a collaboration between Gregory and Todd London who together create a portrait of an artist confronting his later years. Here, too, are the reflections of a man who only recently learned how to love. What does it mean to create art in a world that often places little value on the process of creating it? And what does it mean to confront the process of aging when your greatest work of art may well be your own life?

Honest and poignant

Andre Gregory has led an extraordinary life and his openness about everything is admirable. He has much to say about art of course, and his love of the theatre. But he also says important things about his perspective on freedom and justice and the need to be courageous—especially now. A valuable book and a brave one.

The Memoir to Change Your Life

André Gregory once again gifts us with a collection of stories filled with life, thrill, adventure, sorrow, and love. Mr. Gregory does this while making clear the themes and ideas his audience ought to learn by having heard them. I'm convinced that the only way to consume this work is by allowing Mr. Gregory to speak to you once more to "wake up" and live!

Extraordinary

Mr. Gregory has lived nine lives in one - and has some remarkable stories to tell. What’s particularly lovely about this recording is that, even as he is reading the book, he has a capacity to laugh at the more outrageous stories. A must for anyone who works in the theatre.

A life beautifully led, written, and read.

I’ve already listened to Gregory’s “non” memoir four times and each time I’ve focused on a different strand of his story—his work, the theater, his childhood, his marriage to Chiquita—because he has so much to say, such rare, incredible insight. I have a feeling I’ll also be reading my physical copy multiple times.
