Publisher's summary

The disappearance of Mike Bowditch’s beloved mentor reveals an ominous connection to a 15-year-old cold case in One Last Lie, the new thriller from best-selling Edgar Award finalist Paul Doiron.

“Never trust a man without secrets.” These are the last words retired game warden Charley Stevens speaks to his surrogate son, Warden Investigator Mike Bowditch, before the old man vanishes without explanation. Mike suspects his friend’s mysterious departure has to do with an antique warden badge that recently resurfaced at a flea market - a badge connected to a cold case from Charley’s past that the Maine Warden Service would rather forget.

Fifteen years ago, a young warden was sent on an undercover mission to infiltrate a notorious poaching ring and never returned. He was presumed dead, but his body was never recovered. Mike is desperate to find Charley before he meets a similar fate. His investigation brings him to the miles of forest and riverside towns along the Canadian border - but he soon learns that even his fellow wardens have secrets to keep. And Charley’s past isn’t the only one coming to light; his daughter, Stacey, has resurfaced to search for her missing father, and Mike must grapple with the return of the woman he once thought was gone forever.

Forced to question his faith in the man he sees as a father, Mike must reopen a cold case that powerful people - one of whom may be a killer - will do anything to keep closed.

Narrator again

diminishes a good Bowditch tale.
He's capable of creating individual voices because sometimes he does.
I can only assume it's laziness on his part.
Otherwise the pleasant voice of Mike Bowditch would get 4 or 5 stars.

So close to perfect.

As a 72 year old N H guy, the depth of my love for Paul Doiron’s Maine will warm me through my final days.
Having a place on Ebeemee, T5R9 unorganized territory for a number of years, knowing every inch of the lake, embracing Doiron’s description of loon’s call, lake and pond bottom, what I assume is the description of LURC, logging, skidder-roads, and so much more…the smell of the oil lamp, under the outhouse….ahhh..:what a beautiful vacation….
I send my heart to you.

Fast paced and suspenseful...

One Last Lie by Paul Doiron is an excellent addition to the Mike Bowditch series. The publisher’s summary gives a very good overview of what you can expect.
There’s not a whole lot I could add with out giving away spoilers.
This book can be listened to as a stand alone but I would suggest listening to the series in order. There are so many continuing relationships that I think you get more out of each story with background knowledge.
This book begins with Mike going to Florida on Maine business. He hooks up with Charley Stevens daughter. While there he gets a call from Charley’s wife telling him that Charley has disappeared. Keeping everything secretive Charley has gone off to solve a 30 year old murder. Unasked, Mike follows his friend and mentor into Maine wilderness where the people are more dangerous than the wildlife.
Meanwhile, back at home Mike’s girlfriend is hospitalized and he might not make it back in time if she dies.
Henry Leyva does an outstanding job narrating.

Backwoods mystery

great story that was suggested by my Mom who grew up in the area. Turned out to be a great crime story and from some of the stories my Dad told me makes it that much more believable. nice try with the accents
