Publisher's summary

In Ellison Cooper’s suspense thriller Buried, an FBI neuroscientist is on the trail of a serial killer who’s turned up the heat on a cold case....

Senior Special Agent Sayer Altair studies the minds of psychopaths. But even she didn't expect to uncover a killer within the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Rooting him out and exposing internal corruption got her a bullet wound and six months of desk duty. Now, she’s finally back in the field, called in when an off-duty FBI agent and his cadaver dog fall into a sinkhole filled with human bones.

Found deep in Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park, the skeletal remains date back almost two decades, the same time a beloved local teen disappeared. The cold case quickly heats up when Sayer's team finds two fresh corpses among the bones. When a gruesome clue ties these new bodies to a woman recently kidnapped along with her young daughter, Sayer has to uncover the connection between the old bones and the new bodies before the mother and child become the next victims.

But the killer is one step ahead, attacking her team and sabotaging their efforts. With Sayer's investigation compromised and unsure of who to trust, she receives unwanted help from Subject 037, one of the anonymous psychopaths she is currently studying. She has the chilling realization that he’s someone powerful in Washington DC, - and he is not about to let a mundane serial killer jeopardize his own ominous agenda for Sayer....

GREAT BOOK

I didn't realize this was a sequel to the book Caged. I really enjoyed both books and I'm looking forward to the next one. I was a little disappointed that it didn't show the system was the sequel I would have read it a lot sooner.

Exciting, smart thriller that kept me guessing

This is a scientifically based thriller with a strong female protagonist that had plenty of twists and turns to keep me hooked all the way through to the end. A fun read!

good story, but not so good narration

Another book in the Sayer series where I love the story but do not care for the narration. this narrator is still way too stiff and one note to me. the stories keep me coming back to this series. sometimes I felt like the writing was a little bit basic, with a couple of big words from a thesaurus thrown in occasionally.

Great Sequel..,

This is the second book in the FBI Special Agent Sayer Altair series. The first book is CAGED which I highly recommend. This book can be listened to as a stand alone.
In this book an off duty FBI agent is out taking his human remains detection dog for a walk in the Shenandoah National Park. With out being directed the dog alerts on something she's picked up. It takes the agent a while but he finally locates a cave with multiple bodies. Some going back 20 years.
When Sayer joins the investigation she's attacked along with another agent while in the hole containing the bodies. Once Sayer and her team begin to delve deeper into their investigation she realizes there have been two serial killers working in two time periods. The clues are ominous and written in Greek.
This book is captivating if not completely plausible. It's fast paced and devious and I listened to it in it's entirety in one sitting.
Danielle Deadwyler does an excellent job narrating.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Second verse same as the first - in a good way

I haven’t enjoyed a cop vs killer tête-à-tête this much since Agent Starling and Hannibal Lecter.
I tore through this book, riveted from start to finish. This picks up months after book 1, with Agent Sayer Altair itching to get off medical leave and return to duty. The mystery was horrific without just being about guts and gore. Several characters make welcome reappearances here and several more unique and engaging characters enter the fray (especially police K-9 Kona). As a bonus to the crime thriller, there’s also a political thriller connected to the FBI that sets up the next book.

Oddly enough, as I looked at my review for book 1 (made a full year and a half ago),
everything I previously said applies to this book too:

What a fun ride! So many refreshing differences from every other crime procedural:
⭐️A smart FBI agent who actually uses those smarts (she’s a neuroscientist, for goodness sake)
⭐️A black female lead that adds flavor without getting bogged down in race issues
⭐️A team that actually acts like a team, instead of having the MC doing all the heavy lifting
⭐️Multiple strong, smart women instead of just one gal surrounded by men (and all credibly written!)
⭐️Multi-dimensional supporting characters (Nana, Ezra, neighbor Tino…)
⭐️A gritty serial killer story without cussing or crassness? This is proof it’s possible
⭐️There’s humor and heart to balance the grim
⭐️Effective misdirects
⭐️(Mostly) accurate criminology
⭐️Finally, a crime book that doesn’t rely on sexual abuse to drive the story

Yup. No sophomore slump here. Just like in book 1, I could make minor quibbles. For instance, the failure to get a warrant and trap and trace a known phone number for a known killer when victim lives are on the line seemed like an obvious misstep in favor of a more convoluted solution.
But, was I not entertained? I would totally pay to see this as a movie with Zoe Saldana as Sayer.

Great series, liked this one better then first

I started considering this a great series about half way through this book (the second) , when they started putting a positive spin and upbeat message towards the FBI characters. This is a very nice change of pace while still keeping the killers character dark. I would recommended reading this book first and then going back to read the first.
