1881年1月15日生誕。 理論物理学者、歌人。1906年、東京帝国大学理論物理学科卒業。東北帝国大学助教授時代にヨーロッパに留学し、ゾンマーフェルトに学び、アインシュタインとも親交を結ぶ。
一九二二年、アインシュタインが来日した折には通訳を務め、日本に相対性理論を紹介するなどした。歌人としては「アララギ」派に属し、歌集「靉日（あいじつ）を刊行しているが、歌人・原阿佐緒との恋愛事件によりアララギ派を離れ、大学も辞職。以降は、著作活動や、雑誌「科学」などを通じて、物理学や自然科学の普及に努めた。1947年1月19日没。
