This Veterans Day (November 11th), we're proud to honor our Audible Veterans by introducing a few of them to you. Meet Rena, Frank, and Joe, who bravely served this country and graciously shared their service history.

Rena, Acquisitions and Content Partnerships

After graduating from Columbia University in ’01, I abandoned my plans of going to medical school following the tragedies of 9/11. Instead, I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force Reserve (USAFR), volunteered for activation, and served on active duty for two years. At the start of the war in ’03, as a Senior Airman I was deployed to Rota Naval Station, Spain for approximately six months in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, where I managed and coordinated a contingency air-refueling effort. I was awarded a Medal of Meritorious Service of Excellence for my involvement in this effort. I returned to Reserve status following my deployment and went back to school where I earned an M.P.H. from Yale University and then later a J.D. from University of Michigan Law School. I was honorably discharged from the USAFR in December 2009.

Rena, who helps decide which books Audible is going to produce, is currently listening to Shaken by Tim Tebow.

  • Shaken: Discovering Your True Identity in the Midst of Life's Storms

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 13 mins)
    • By Tim Tebow
    • Narrated By Fred Berman
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In this powerful book, Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow passionately shares glimpses of his journey staying grounded in the face of disappointment, criticism, and intense media scrutiny. Following an exceptional college football career with the Florida Gators and a promising playoff run with the Denver Broncos, Tebow was traded to the New York Jets. He was released after one season. In Shaken, Tebow talks about what he's learned along the way.

Dean Helms says: "Tim Tebow has touched my heart and mind!"

Frank, Financial Planning and Analysis

I started my time in the Army as a cadet at West Point in 2000 immediately following high school. After graduating and being commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, I served five years in the US Army as an Armor officer with duty stations spanning the globe. I first served as a tank platoon leader with the 2nd Infantry Division in South Korea stationed just south of the North Korean border. Following my tour in Korea, I joined the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii as the second in command of a Scout troop preparing for a combat. I deployed to Camp Taji, Iraq as part of the historic surge operation, and served as the units logistics officer for the 15 month deployment in the northern suburbs of Baghdad. Following my redeployment and after enjoying some relaxing time in Hawaii, I left the Army as a Captain.

Frank, who joined Audible in March, is currently listening to NOS4A2 by Joe Hill.

  • NOS4A2: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (19 hrs and 41 mins)
    • By Joe Hill
    • Narrated By Kate Mulgrew

Victoria McQueen has an uncanny knack for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. When she rides her bicycle over the rickety old covered bridge in the woods near her house, she always emerges in the places she needs to be. Vic doesn't tell anyone about her unusual ability, because she knows no one will believe her. She has trouble understanding it herself.

Joe, Content Operations Specialist

I joined the U.S. Navy as an enlisted airman on January 23, 2007. In joining, my intent was to gain perspective, knowledge, and work towards being a part of something larger than myself, and in this I was successful. I also wanted to go out to sea, as I have always loved being on the water, and in this I was remarkably unsuccessful. My rate (job) while enlisted was as an Aviation Electronics Technician, Second Class Petty Officer, or AT2. While many AT’s get assigned to ships, I was assigned to the flight line on Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. While there, I worked on electronic warfare systems (radar jammers, scramblers, etc.), for EA-6B and AC-130 aircraft. It was an incredible experience that I wouldn’t trade for the world.

Joe just finished listening to Here I Am by Jonathan Safran Foer, which he says is "incredible in both content, and in narrative style and quality. It is the kind of book without heroes, but with raw and knowledgeable humanity."

  • Here I Am: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs and 59 mins)
    • By Jonathan Safran Foer
    • Narrated By Ari Fliakos
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Unfolding over four tumultuous weeks in present-day Washington, DC, Here I Am is the story of a fracturing family in a moment of crisis. As Jacob and Julia Bloch and their three sons are forced to confront the distances between the lives they think they want and the lives they are living, a catastrophic earthquake sets in motion a quickly escalating conflict in the Middle East. At stake is the meaning of home - and the fundamental question of how much aliveness one can bear.

Amazon Customer says: "Great book, probably best to read (not listen) it."
