  • The Fountainhead

    • UNABRIDGED (32 hrs and 1 min)
    • By Ayn Rand
    • Narrated By Christopher Hurt
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

One of the 20th century's most challenging novels of ideas, The Fountainhead champions the cause of individualism through the story of a gifted young architect who defies the tyranny of conventional public opinion. The struggle for personal integrity in a world that values conformity above creativity is powerfully illustrated through three characters: Howard Roarke, a genius; Gail Wynand, a newspaper mogul and self-made millionaire; and Dominique Francon, a devastating beauty.

    "Go for the unabridged"

My 19 year old son is a great Ayn Rand fan and has read all her books, and I could tell he was influenced by her thinking and wanted to discuss it. I was never going to get the time to read the books. So I tested the waters with Anthem- a good, quick listen, and knew I wanted more. The Unabridged version of The Fountainhead seemed so daunting, but I took the chance and 32 hours later am glad I did! I echo the other reviewers in the riveting interest in the book and would encourage anyone interested in modern thought to go for the whole thing! Today I download Atlas Shrugged... Unabridged!

  • A Game of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (33 hrs and 50 mins)
    • By George R. R. Martin
    • Narrated By Roy Dotrice
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In a time long forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons off balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. As the cold returns, sinister forces are massing beyond the protective wall of the kingdom of Winterfell. To the south, the king's powers are failing, with his most trusted advisor mysteriously dead and enemies emerging from the throne's shadow.

    "Between Genres"

Soon to be an HBO miniseries, I wanted to catch up on one of my kids' favorite book series. GRR Martin doesn't quite know if he is writing historical fiction, an epic tale, or epic fantasy. I've heard subsequent books favor the epic fantasy genre. I wasn't going to keep listening to the series because there are too many bad outcomes and unhappy events to my liking, but in the end he left me just enough positive and interesting scenarios for the better loved characters that I am intrigued and will download Book II for my next big drive. The narration is masterful, the pace excellent, the prose sufficiently descriptive to captivate one's listening ear.

  • Jesus Rediscovered

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 22 mins)
    • By Malcolm Muggeridge
    • Narrated By Frederick Davidson

In addition to being one of the most important literary figures of the 20-century, Malcolm Muggeridge is an authentic Christian mystic. Though openly admitting he is not a theologian, his life embodies a deep and wonderful communion with God. This work includes his thoughts and reflections upon the Christian religion. It represents, in his words, "a sustained effort of one aging, 20-century mind to give expression to a deep dissatisfaction with prevailing contemporary values and assumptions, and an abiding sense, ever more overwhelming in its intensity, that there is an alternative - an alternative that was first propounded 2,000 years ago near the Sea of Galilee, was fulfilled on the hill called Golgotha and in the events that followed and, despite all the villainies and ups-and-downs of history, has been the glory of 2,000 years of Christendom."

    Alan Rither says: "Muggeridge Rediscovered"
    "Initially compelling..."

After outlining Muggeridges' excellent insight into Christianity and its relevance to the human condition in the 20th century, the collection descends into repetitive themes and excerpts from MM's published material that don't make for a compelling listen from start to finish, as for a long drive. To pick it up and listen to a chapter now and then might be acceptable. MM has ideas worth hearing, and supports the Christian faith with a measure of skepticism that will appeal to thinking Christians.
