Their only criteria was oceanfront and isolation, their only desire to strengthen their far-flung friendships. They called themselves the Girls of August. But when one of the Girls dies tragically, the group slowly drifts apart and their vacations together are brought to a halt. Years later, a new marriage reunites them and they decide to come together once again on a remote barrier island off the South Carolina coast. There, far from civilization, the women make startling discoveries that will change them in ways they never expected.

Would you try another book from Anne Rivers Siddons and/or Kate Reading?

Not after reading this book! I was so looking forward to reading a new book by Anne Rivers Siddons because I hadn't read a book of hers for a while and used to REALLY love her books. It was almost as if this was written by a different author. I was so disappointed......

What was most disappointing about Anne Rivers Siddons’s story?

The characters were flat.....lifeless....people you didn't really care about as there was no substance to them....nothing to interest you in them or their lives. It was a huge non-story. The ending was absolutely ridiculous. I'm not happy that I wasted one of my credits on this book. But, I did read it to the end just to see if it got any better. It only got worse. Bad characters, bad storyline and unnecessary bad language.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The narration was terrible....especially Baby! Just awful!

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Girls of August?

    All of them!

Laugh-out-loud funny and deeply touching, Beth Hoffman's sparkling debut is, as Kristin Hannah says, "packed full of Southern charm, strong women, wacky humor, and good old-fashioned heart." It is a novel that explores the indomitable strengths of female friendship and gives us the story of a young girl who loses one mother and finds many others.

Three sisters reunite on Sullivan’s Island off the coast of South Carolina after years of separation in this heartwarming first novel in a new trilogy from a beloved author. 80-year-old Marietta Muir is a dowager of Charleston society who has retired to her historic summer home on Sullivan’s Island. At the onset of summer, Marietta - "Mamaw" - seeks to gather her three granddaughters - Carson, Eudora, and Harper - with the intent to reunite them after years apart.

Would you listen to The Summer Girls again? Why?

This is one book you will want to listen to over and over. Mary Alice is not only a wonderful author but she reads her own books and, really, I can't imagine anyone else reading her stories to us. She knows her characters better than anyone and becomes them as she's reading her story to us!

The best part is that this is the first book in a trilogy and you will be looking for the second book as soon as you finish this one! But......we'll have to wait until next year and it will be well worth waiting for!
