while somewhat simplistic, i found this to paint one of the most sympathetic portraits of a much maligned President. I was at a complete loss to understand why Bush and his allies felt this was an attack. For someone with as dismal a record as the current president, the kind words and sympathetic observations at least humanised Bush. He comes forth as well meaning yet manipulated by Rove, Rumsfield and Cheney, the true axis of evil. After listening to this, I cannot help but feel had Bush been left to his own devises, and not "advised" by such aggressive and self-serving people, this country may well be in a far better place. The narration was somewhat forced and did not flow as well as some, however it was listenable. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a beter idea of how a basically descent man was put in over his head, and made the fool by those with an outdated failed agenda from the past.
I have always felt Amanda was not guilty of anything to do with this horrible murder, and this book solidifies my feelings. the Italian government, such as it is, was pissed, as well they should be, at a US fighter plane clipping a ski lift cable and killing 18 people. the USG refused to allow the pilot to stand trial in Italy for manslaughter, and so Amanda was pay-back. What the italian government did to an 18 year old kid is revolting, and I will never buy another bottle of wop wina again! This is a straight forward statement of a young woman wrongly accused of a horrible crime, and a horrible judicial system allowing her to become a 'circus animal". i wish nothing but good fortune to Ms Know, she has earned it.
it tells the whole story, and fillls in the blanks left by the press, especially the slanderous bwittish press.
she seems honest and sincere
This is one of the few books i've listened to that i'd give another go round. John roberts is a fascinating character. Sociopath, maybe. Evil, probably, however that is certainly hard to feel after getting to know the man, and get to know him you do in this open and insightful biography. Not many bios tell as much as John does, and he does so in such a mater of fact way, regardless of how frightful the scene may be.
The Godfather, however John R is some piece of work. I knew people like him then, for those who survived, they are "the old days" when you could get away with almost anything if you had ½ a brain. He is no Don corleone, Sonny, maybe…
but he ran a show, and people respected him, even if he had a thing for "those" kind of women...
the accent, most of the time, you think its John reading it himself.
Don't hate john, I've read several reviews of the book urging people not to buy it, not to support a criminal, but there's so much more here…John is a flawed human, with a conscience…a survivor, and survive he did! made millions on illegal things, yet was recognised by people close to presidents and other sorta respectable folks. Was respected by Myer Lansky. and in the end, well, after you listen to the book, and catch your breath, google him…there's more to the end of the story than in the listen.
Tom Sharpe is the funniest man alive, truly. My wife moved to a different seat on a plane I was laughing so hard, this one ranks there with Blott on the landscape and Porterhouse Blue. I wish that there were more of his work available on audible. It's brilliant.
an excellent explanation of the unintended consequences of the US foray into central asia and the middle east. this is required reading to gain an understanding of some of the subtleties of what is happening there, and how to avoid such in the future. well researched and written, highly recommended. while certainly not "exciting" from a traditional sense, nor revealing per se in the manner of "what happened" this is a sober analysis of what can happen when decisions are not well thought out, when all consequences are not considered, when old ways of looking at a situation are applied to new and unfamiliar territory.
