Set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, Joyland tells the story of the summer in which college student Devin Jones comes to work as a carny and confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and the ways both will change his life forever. Joyland is a brand-new novel and has never previously been published.

Cozy Reader says: "The sweest and creepiest coming of age story!"
    "The narrator was Devin Jones!"

What made the experience of listening to Joyland the most enjoyable?

The narrator really was Dev for me, and there was enough variation for the other characters as well to help me know who was speaking.

What other book might you compare Joyland to and why?

The Body...or better known as Stand by Me also by Stephen King. A coming of age story of friendship, with a creepy twist. This novel is also told by the narrator as an adult, recalling the summer he spent with his friends, finding out something about themselves while on a quest to face their fears.

Which character – as performed by Michael Kelly – was your favorite?

Definitely the main character, Dev. Lane Hardy was a close second for me.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me cry while driving in to work. The relationships of these characters was so authentic for me. I also laughed as Dev was such a thoughtful boy, but also very typical for a twenty-one year old. king always has sprinkles of sardonic humor to keep things light.

    Any additional comments?

The descriptions in the book allowed me to truly imagine Joyland, that old fashioned carnival by the sea. I could hear the calliope and taste the sugary cotton candy and pup dogs! What a fun and nostalgic listen.
