"You’ve seen it all before. A malicious online rumor costs a company millions. A political sideshow derails the national news cycle and destroys a candidate. Some product or celebrity zooms from total obscurity to viral sensation. What you don’t know is that someone is responsible for all this. Usually, someone like me. I’m a media manipulator. In a world where blogs control and distort the news, my job is to control blogs—as much as any one person can."

This audiobook suffers from Holiday's terribly inexpert reading. His is not a professional voice.

However, the strength of the message carries through. Once Ryan explains the cynical way in which information is manipulated on the internet you will never look at another sensational story the same way again.

This is an important work for our age. Read it...or remain vulnerable.

“Writing is a craft you can learn,” says Roy Peter Clark. “You need tools, not rules.” In this essential guide, Clark distills decades of experience into fifty tools that writers of all kinds can use every day. You may be crafting a newspaper story or an admissions essay for college. You may be writing a technical report or drafting your first novel. You may be a student or a teacher, a poet or a critic, a columnist or a blogger. You may be preparing a PowerPoint presentation or penning a love letter.

This is one of the best, most concise and useful books on writing that I have ever read...or heard, in this case!

I am a documentary filmmaker and routinely write my own voiceover for my videos. Every one of these tools is relevant to my craft, not only to the writing, but to the editing of the video as well!

Roy Peter Clark is not a professional voice over artist and so his delivery is sometimes a bit overly deliberate and full of pauses. But this is a very small criticism of an otherwise engaging and worthwhile audiobook. His reading style is easy enough to get used to, and may even be preferable to those who need the time to absorb the material.

Roy Clark knows his stuff and I am considering purchasing one of his other audiobooks.

Book store nation, in the history of mankind there has never been a greater country than America. You could say we're the number one nation at being the best at greatness. But as perfect as America is in every single way, America is broken! And we can't exchange it because we're 236 years past the 30-day return window. Look around - we don't make anything anymore, we've mortgaged our future to China, and the Apologist-in-Chief goes on world tours just to bow before foreign leaders.

What made the experience of listening to America Again the most enjoyable?

Steven's delivery is essential to this book! If you love his show, you will like this.

Would you recommend America Again to your friends? Why or why not?

I would definitely recommend this book

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Of course I laughed out loud! It's Colbert!

    Any additional comments?

The book seemed a little short, maybe that's because I was enjoying it so much. Stephen can make deep insights into the current political and pop culture scene that make you think and laugh at the same time!

  • The Modern Scholar: Way with Words: Writing Rhetoric and the Art of Persuasion

Esteemed professor Michael D. C. Drout brings his expertise in literary studies to the subject of rhetoric. From history-altering political speeches to friendly debates at cocktail parties, rhetoric holds the power to change opinions, spark new thoughts, and ultimately change the world.

Jade says: "A Very Unique Read...(J/K)"
    "Drout is a great teacher!"

    Story
Would you listen to The Modern Scholar again? Why?

I will definitely listen to this audio book again and again. It contains much useful information but, more than that, Prof. Drout is probably one of the best teachers of any kind that I have encountered.

He made what could have been a dry subject entertaining and interesting, injecting his passion and personality into every lecture.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Modern Scholar?

After a particularly energetic diatribe against the misuse of the word "literally" Prof . Drout stopps, somewhat out of breath, and said, "Okay, I'm done ranting now."

    Short pause...

    "No I'm not!"

And then he launches into another screed against more of his linguistic pet peeves. LOL!

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

"Don't tell them what you need to say; tell them what they need to hear."

This is not only an important point to remember when writing or speaking, but can be applied to other aspects of life as well!

    Any additional comments?

Prof. Drout is such a good teacher that I am considering buying more of his lectures, even about subjects which do not particularly interest me, because I know that it will be fascinating mostly because Drout will be at the microphone.

  • Tough Sh-t: Life Advice from a Fat, Lazy Slob Who Did Good

Take one look at Kevin Smith: He's a balding fatty who wears a size XXL hockey jersey, shorts, and slippers year-round. Not a likely source for life advice. But take a second look at Kevin Smith: He changed filmmaking forever when he was twenty-four with the release of Clerks, and since then has gone on to make nine more profitable movies, runs his own production company, wrote a best-selling graphic novel, and has a beautiful wife and kids. So he must be doing something right.

Pamela says: "Such a likable slob!"

Where does Tough Sh-t rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This has been one of my favorite audiobooks I've listened to so far. It was one of those that I couldn't stop listening to and came back to over and over in my spare moments until it was done.

What about Kevin Smith’s performance did you like?

No one but Kevin could have read this story. "Silent Bob" is actually one of the most eloquent and entertaining speakers and writers around today.

    Any additional comments?

If you are a fan of Smith's films this is a must-have. Even if you are not, there are plenty of behind-the-scenes Hollywood stories and just plain good insights about his life and life in general to make this worth your while.

Be warned, Kevin Smith is often raunchy and profane, but he is always sensitive, intelligent and funny. Also, some of the material has been presented in his live Q&A videos before (I've watched all of them) but the stories are here clarified and polished for the book.

I highly recommend this to Smith fans, those interested in filmmaking or anyone who likes biographies.

  • The Modern Scholar: Masterpieces of Western Music

This lecture series focuses on the very best of Western music, and as we progress through these lectures, the following are two important questions that we will seek to answer as we examine the various musical selections: What makes these works masterpieces? Why highlight these works?

ESK says: "Excellent and solid listen"
"A joyful tour through the history of the classics!"
    Overall

    Story
    Any additional comments?

I recommend this book to everyone! It is complex enough for those who know music and simple enough for beginners.

The sound quality of the musical examples is not the best, but you should buy and listen to the complete recordings of the pieces after the lecture anyway, if you don't already have them.

Also, Prof. Lependorf is not a professional voice artist, that is clear. However, his love and enthusiasm for the subject shines through and his delivery is very relaxed and friendly. Prof. Lependorf gave new depth to pieces that I thought I knew well, and turned me on to others that I had neglected for one reason or another.

These are fascinating lectures that include both the technical music theory behind the pieces, as well as the human stories of the people that created them and just enough audio examples to demonstrate his points while enticing us to seek out the full recordings to hear more.

  • Stein on Writing: A Master Editor Shares His Craft, Techniques, and Strategies

Stein on Writing provides immediately useful advice for writers of fiction and nonfiction, whether newcomers or accomplished professionals. As Sol Stein, renowned editor, author, and instructor, explains, "This is not a book of theory. It is a book of usable solutions, how to fix writing that is flawed, how to improve writing that is good, how to create interesting writing in the first place."

Would you consider the audio edition of Stein on Writing to be better than the print version?

I enjoy the audio version because I can listen to it on my iPod while doing chores. I am beginning my second pass through the book right now!

Have you listened to any of Christopher Lane’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not heard Christopher Lane before but he is a fine a voice performer as you can get! His reading of this book was perfect, in my estimation.

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

I found his application of fiction writing techniques to non-fiction a revelation. I am a documentary filmmaker and often write the voice over for my films. This book has transformed the way I view that task.

    Any additional comments?

Every writer MUST read this! Even if you do not aspire to become a writer, listening to this book will enhance your enjoyment of good writing.

  • The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference

In The Tipping Point, New Yorker writer Malcolm Gladwell looks at why major changes in society happen suddenly and unexpectedly. Just as a single sick person can start an epidemic of the flu, so too can a few fare-beaters and graffiti artists fuel a subway crime wave, or a satisfied customer fill the empty tables of a new restaurant. These are social epidemics, and the moment when they take off, when they reach their critical mass, is the Tipping Point.

    Marian Hanganu says: "Exceptional!"

    Story
Where does The Tipping Point rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is one of the better audiobooks I have downloaded and one of the best of Gladwell's work.

What does Malcolm Gladwell bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Malcolm is a master storyteller as well as a sociologist. I find his narration of his own work essential to helping create the tone of wonderment and mystery-solving that he brings to everything he does.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I found it hard to stop listening and I often played the book while carrying my iPod around my apartment in my pocket!

    Any additional comments?

Although I feel that Gladwell stretches a little bit to make his thesis at a few points, this is an overall interesting book and well worth your listen. It is entertaining and enlightening.

Long renowned as one of the smartest writers on the loose, David Foster Wallace reveals himself in Consider the Lobster to be also one of the funniest. In this program, he ranges far and farther in his search for the original, the curious, or the merely mystifying. He discovers the World's Largest Lobster Cooker at the Maine Lobster Festival and confronts the inevitable question just beyond the butter-or-cocktail-sauce quandary.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this audiobook. David Foster Wallace had a knack for insight that is rare. I was sad to see that this book was abridged. The essays were wonderful as always but it was over too soon.

What does David Foster Wallace bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

David's reading was not the best I've heard. He's a little monotonous. But it was nice to hear his voice and it worked well enough for these essays.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I wanted to save this book for an upcoming car trip but I could help myself and I ended up listening to it all before I left!
