First setting: an all-male prep school in Arizona, where two sensitive freshmen form a bond based on their interest in magic tricks. Second setting: the labyrinthine house of a weird magician uncle in New England, where the two boys spend a memorable summer being trained in the art of illusion. Or is it real magic? Third setting: an alternate world where dark forces are at play - forces that first show up at the school, but intensify their power the summer.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?"

Scientific mind meets the mind of a complete idiot. All in the same package. I loved this story, though extremely far fetched, it was great to get a glimpse of what technology of space travel might be like, plus I laughed out loud.

If you want a realistic mars voyage story, this is not for you. If you can not wait to see a mars story where Seth Rogan is cast as a scientist trapped on mars for a year, then this book is for you.

If you like Sue Grafton, then you will like this one. Nothing out of the ordinary, but that's what I like about the Grafton books is that you pretty much know you are going to have a decent detective story without wondering if you are going to hear something that you don't want to un-hear.

John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First, he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce - and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So, we fight, to defend Earth and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding.

This is an interesting sci-fi love story set in a time when the worlds aging can choose to enlist in the military with the illusive draw of being young again. There are some strings attached of course, but they make for an interesting story as Scalzi's main character makes a name for himself in his military space retirement adventure.

    I recommend this book.

It's a simple story. Boy finds proof that reality is a computer program. Boy uses program to manipulate time and space. Boy gets in trouble. Boy flees back in time to Medieval England to live as a wizard while he tries to think of a way to fix things. Boy gets in more trouble. Oh, and boy meets girl at some point.

This book made me laugh, it was a pleasure to re-account to my husband at night, though I'm sure my narration style is not as excellent as Luke Daniels. He did an excellent job with this laugh out loud story about a boy who gets in over his head while toying with the ultimate computer program.

I recommend this book if you are looking for a light hearted good time read.

In John Scalzi's re-imagining of H. Beam Piper's 1962 sci-fi classic Little Fuzzy, written with the full cooperation of the Piper Estate, Jack Holloway works alone for reasons he doesnt care to talk about. Hundreds of miles from ZaraCorps headquarters on planet, 178 light-years from the corporations headquarters on Earth, Jack is content as an independent contractor, prospecting and surveying at his own pace. As for his past, thats not up for discussion.

I put off reading this book for a while because of all the reviews that comment on the "he said, she said" quality in the narration. It was annoying, but I got used to it, and the story line was good enough to make up for it. It's really the only reason that I didn't gve it 5 stars.

I would still recommend this book. The main character has the sassy-sarcastic whit that seems common to Scalzi stories, and the events made for a good story.

I really enjoy Wil Wheaton as a narrator as well.

The killer escapes. Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

I guess with the volume of books he writes that they can't all be zingers. I thought Doctor Sleep was great, but this one and Joyland have left me wanting for something more.

The bad guy in this book was not as hate-able as some of his other reads. I had to speed the narration up to x1.25, and I still felt like the narrator was on some sort of meds.

I've read some other Scalzi books, Fuzzy Nation, Redshirts, Old Mans War, and I enjoyed all of them. They all have the same quality of good old fashioned good humored quixotic boy meets world to them. The stories are slightly predictable, yet still entertaining.

I don't know why it took me so long to get to this one, I got it on the daily deal, and am not sure why I didn't choose it sooner.

Wil Wheaton is also an excellent narrator. I actually started listening to ths Scalzi books after hearing him perform Ready Player One (an excellent audio book) and will probably continue to look for his works.

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her "our little genius". Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh. Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up. Melanie doesn't know why this makes Miss Justineau look sad.

This book goes way beyond being just another blood and gore zombie book, but a book that tells the same story from each of the characters perspectives in a time of global change/tragedy.

This falls more into a character story, than a post apocalyptic thriller, and will have you emotionally attached to even the worst characters as your felings change throughout the story progression. Some interesting twists, and very well written.

This was my first time with Finty Williams as a narrator, and I think she did an excellent job. Definitely a good casting choice.

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, Ready Player One is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.

If you grew up in the 80's you will laugh your face off at this book. My husband and I have a once a month 16 1/2 hour commute. We go through a lot of audiobooks. My only regret about this book is that there is not another one like it to read. We've recommended it to a lot of our friends, and I would like to recommend it to anyone who wants to walk down memory lane, and be treated to an original interesting story at the same time.

Wil Wheaton really did a great job narrating, I've gone on to listen to Scalzi books because his performance was so good in this one.

I don't know what took me so long to get around to reading it.
