I love every one of Terry Pratchett Discworld books.I am an addict and admit it. Knowing of Terry's precarious health I treat everyone of his new books as gift to be savoured. Too soon there will be no more new ones. I have all of his books in hard copy and all of his audio books in both abridged and unabridged versions. I enjoy Stephen Briggs narrative but to be frank I much prefer Tony Robinson's. His voices, I suppose because he is an comic actor, are so much better. I try to explain my love of these books to friends but they just don't get it. Until I heard a play on BBC radio of Guards Guards I never had heard of him. Once I heard the play I was hooked. I have even bought the few videos that are available of his books and wish they would make more of them.
Snuff has all my favourite characters in it including Death , Haverlock and Nobby. The relationship between Sam and Lady Sybil has grown and deepened and romantic that I am I can't help wishing they would have a daughter.
The ever resourceful Willikins has a much larger part in this book and
his back story made it possible to understand his various skills. I am hoping that in Sir Terry's next book we find a goblin on the Watch. A very satisfying read for every Discworld addict.
The different stories and characters. Not a real detective story per se
The period details. Flappers and such like. One of Pyne's employees referred to as a 'vamp'
It did both. I very much enjoyed this book and also The Mysterious Mr. Quinn.
As much as I enjoy her detective novels I think a lot of readers/listeners miss the boat by not checking out Miss Christie's short stories. She had a real gift for writing them especially ones with a twist in the end.
Yes I enjoy her books and I find that Diana Bishop is the only female narrator that I really enjoy listening to on audio.
I did not finish the book. I heard it until the 8th Chapter and then quit and returned the book. I have read other of this writer's works and really enjoyed them. I am sure I will be judged as prudish but the graphic sex scenes especially the rape was very offensive to me and therefore I did not finish it.
Excellent voice impersonations. Good clear diction.
If this had been an actual physical book I could have skipped over the sexual aspect much easier than with the audio book. I choose to return the book rather than finish it.
No. The narrator is very poor. Very girlish and fake Irish accident. She does not sound like the feisty character she is in the books. Also to be honest too much crying and screaming and worrying about the child to be interesting. This will probably be the last of this series I will read. It was much better when she wasn't married.
Very girlish. All the women sounded like they were 12 years old. No one sounded confident or like an adult. Bad accents
Nope. There are other books in the series that would make much better movies than this one.
This is a side of L.A. that I had never heard of before. I remember hearing that it had been very corrupt in the 20s and 30s but not to this extent. It was totally fascinating to read about the history of the city and its people. Amazing what went on in the town. I love
history and really enjoyed this book.
When 'the' murder was committed. I was actually very surprised at the about total about face of the person involved. Money is corrupting no matter what.
Have not heard this person before but I was pleased with his performance. I much prefer male narrators. I feel they do a better job than women in narrating audio books. It is a factor for me as to whether I will purchase a book.
Yes I wish I could have listened to it all at once as I really had to tear myself away from it to get anything else done. That is how I know it was a great book!
I had no idea that oil had been such a huge thing in Cal. and the money involved was incredible when you think that they paid very little taxes in those days. The house built by the oil tycoon for his son and daughter in law was beyond belief both in extravagance and cost. It actually surpasses anything that today's billionaires have done.
I guess I am too used to the movie where the narrator is the author Jean Shepherd. The book needed someone with a warm deep voice and Cavett's is too light and almost 'girly'.I never got the impression he enjoyed what he was doing and there was never any change in his inflection no matter what was happening in the story. I had my doubts before I bought and I should have stayed with my instincts and not purchased this. If you are a real fan of the movie don't buy this. You will be disappointed. I gave up after the first chapter.
I am not a US citizen but I have always been interested by the life of Mr. Lincoln. Any
previous books that I had read seemed to be filled with inaccuracies that even I recognized.
This book has been meticulously researched and for a true history lover it is a real treat.
Many things I had never heard before and the things I had heard turned out to be
completely false. It is a long read but very enjoyable and having just finished it I am
going to listen to it again as it was so interesting the first time. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the president and any history lover. I enjoyed the
narrator very much. Some people may complain about the amount of detail ie ranks of soldiers and their units etc but I think it added to the narrative.
Like Shirley I own all of Terry's books. I was very disappointed in this one. Way too long and draggy. Did not live up to the advance publicity or even what I thought it was going to be about. I would not recommend nor will I bother with the rest of the series. I will wait patiently for the next Discworld novel to arrive.
I was looking for something that combined two of my interests true crime and history. I am not much
for present day crime but this looked good. It was fantastic! I sat down at 6.00 p.m. and was still
awake at 3.00 a.m. listening to it. (on a work night yet!) I couldn't wait to hear the end. One reviewer comments on technical difficulties but I hear none.I was not aware of this shipwreck but I am now
doing research and finding the layout of the ship etc makes it so much more real. Truly fascinating
book with twists and turns you will never believe and it is all true! Highly recommended! I am going
to buy the paper book now.
Very disappointing after Winter Queen and Leviathan. Gave up after chapter 10 as I didn't care what happened to anyone in the book. Way too much of a spoiled stupid immature child and very little of the supposed hero of the series. Even after supposedly nursing the dead and wounded in war she still comes across as vapid and self obsessed. What was the writer thinking when he wrote this??
I am not sure I want to continue reading the series if this is the way it is going. If I could give it zero stars I would.
