Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife. She may go out once a day to markets whose signs are now pictures because women are not allowed to read. She must pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, for in a time of declining birthrates her value lies in her fertility, and failure means exile to the dangerously polluted Colonies. Offred can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name....

What made the experience of listening to The Handmaid's Tale the most enjoyable?

Claire Danes did an amazing job. I had previously read this book many years ago but had forgotten much of the story so this was a great re-read.

What did you like best about this story?

I love this story, I already knew that but hearing from a great narrator made it even better. So much to like about the book including the setting the characters and inner thoughts. If you have never read anything by Margaret Atwood this is a great book to start with.

If you could take any character from The Handmaid's Tale out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I would want to go to dinner with Luke or the Commander. I want to know what the men really think about what has been done to the women in society and why they let it happen.

Winner of such prestigious honors as the Booker Prize and Whitbread Award, Ian McEwan is justifiably regarded as a modern master. Set in 1972, Sweet Tooth follows Cambridge student Serena Frome, whose intelligence and beauty land her a job with England's intelligence agency, MI5. In an attempt to monitor writers' politics, MI5 tasks Serena with infiltrating the literary circle of author Tom Healy. But soon matters of trust and identity subvert the operation.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

no- it was too slow of a book to listen to but I might enjoy reading not listening to this.

If you’ve listened to books by Ian McEwan before, how does this one compare?

I have read other Ian McEwan books and enjoyed them. He writes beautiful stories but perhaps they should be read and not listened to.

What three words best describe Juliet Stevenson’s performance?

Average- I have come to realize that I have a hard time listening to narrators with a British accent.

When the world ends, can love survive? For Scarlet, raising her two daughters alone means fighting for tomorrow is an everyday battle. Nathan has a wife, but can't remember what it's like to be in love; only his young daughter Zoe makes coming home worthwhile. Miranda's biggest concern is whether her new VW Bug is big enough to carry her sister and their boyfriends on a weekend escape from college finals. When reports of a widespread, deadly "outbreak" begin to surface, these ordinary people face extraordinary circumstances and suddenly their fates are intertwined.

What would have made Red Hill better?

I thought this would be post apocalyptic and instead it was a zombie book. Perhaps I read something wrong. Something about the readers drove me nuts - had to stop reading it as I just couldn't stand to listen to them.

Has Red Hill turned you off from other books in this genre?

yes and- no- I still love a good post apocalyptic story as long as there are no zombie

Would you be willing to try another one of the narrators’s performances?

possibly- one of the narrators read Agilent and she was not bad in that book but I think having heard them read this book does turn me off.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Annoyance
