  • Basic Economics: A Citizen's Guide to the Economy

    • UNABRIDGED (18 hrs and 31 mins)
    • By Thomas Sowell
    • Narrated By Brian Emerson

Basic Economics has been written with the thought that learning economics should be not only a relaxed experience but also an enjoyable one.

Knitting Maniac says: "Insufferable narrator, clear and interesting book"
    "good book"

Very good book. Easy to listen to.
Sowell brings clarity to a subject that is usually poorly understood by most people. The book will take the reader to a different level of comprehension of economics and dispel many well entrenched myths. Should be mandatory reading to anyone in positions of management.

  • Lisbon: War in the Shadows of the City of Light, 1939–1945

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 35 mins)
    • By Neill Lochery
    • Narrated By Robin Sachs
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Throughout the Second World War, Lisbon was at the very center of the world’s attention and was the only European city in which both the Allies and the Axis powers openly operated. Portugal was frantically trying to hold on to its self-proclaimed wartime neutrality but in reality was increasingly caught in the middle of the economic, and naval, wars between the Allies and the Nazis. The story is not, however, a conventional tale of World War II in that barely a shot was fired or a bomb dropped. Instead, it is a gripping tale of intrigue, betrayal, opportunism, and double-dealing....

Lynn says: "Expostiion of Little Known Story"
    "great book"
What did you love best about Lisbon?

book is easy to listen to. very interesting in its narrative. It portrayed Mr Salazar in a very interesting light, certainly an immensely smart man that dealt with both warring sides with great diplomacy and tact and was able to keep Portugal safe. He describes in a very entertainng way the intricacies of the relationships taking place during the war,

  • Going Rogue: An American Life

    • ABRIDGED (7 hrs and 17 mins)
    • By Sarah Palin
    • Narrated By Sarah Palin

In this eagerly anticipated memoir, Palin paints an intimate portrait of growing up in the wilds of Alaska; meeting her lifelong love; her decision to enter politics; the importance of faith and family; and the unique joys and trials of life as a high-profile working mother. She also opens up for the first time about the 2008 presidential race, providing a rare, mom's-eye view of high-stakes national politics - from patriots dedicated to "Country First" to slick politicos bent on winning at any cost.

Mike & Jan Geihsler says: "Needed unabridged"
    "very good"

Sarah has a special warmth in her voice and she sounds like an ordinary person. Her book is great, very well crafted - I followed the elections and welcomed the book - it did not disappoint, I learned a lot from it.
She will make a difference for America and the World at this time of great uncertainty, in whatever position she lands.

  • America's March to Socialism: Why We're One Step Closer to Giant Missile Parades

    • UNABRIDGED (1 hr and 6 mins)
    • By Glenn Beck
    • Narrated By Glenn Beck

From massive government spending to media declarations of the death of capitalism, Glenn Beck hears the sounds of boots marching America toward a system of government that bears a closer resemblance to socialism with each passing day. To document this, he focuses on stories that range from the headlines to more obscure local stories that might otherwise be overlooked.

    Doug says: "rerun"

I do like Glenn and have read his other books with pleasure.
In this audio book however, the level of the background music forced me to put it away after the first chapter. Pity, I hope it can be reissued without the annoying 'marching band' music.

  • The Housing Boom and Bust

    • UNABRIDGED (4 hrs and 43 mins)
    • By Thomas Sowell
    • Narrated By Robertson Dean

There was no single, dramatic event that set the current financial crisis off. A whole series of very questionable decisions by many people, in many places, over a period of years, built up the pressures that led to a sudden collapse of the housing market and of financial institutions that began to fall like dominoes as a result of investing in securities based on housing prices. This book is designed to unravel the tangled threads of that story.

Adolphe says: "Inciteful Non partisan blame"
    "very good"

Another great book by Thomas Sowell.
I have read most of his writings. The clarity of his thoughts and his intelligence is amazing.
Another classic for the 'weekend' economist.

  • Our Enemy, The State

    • UNABRIDGED (4 hrs and 30 mins)
    • By Albert J. Nock
    • Narrated By Phillip J. Sawtelle

Originally published in 1935, this elegant essay on the nature of the state shows the important distinction between state power and social power. "Every assumption of power, whether by gift or seizure," he writes, "leaves society with so much less power; there is never, nor can be, any strengthening of state power without a corresponding and roughly equivalent depletion of social power."

    joe blower says: "long ago"
    "long ago"

It is most extraordinary that so long ago, Mr. Nock had such clarity of vision.
This book is timeless - I highly recommend it for content, clarity and ease of listening.
I feel cheated that I did not know of this book before.

  • Fool's Gold

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 7 mins)
    • By Gillian Tett
    • Narrated By Stephen Hoye

A best seller on both sides of the Atlantic, Fool's Gold is a key commentary on the causes of the recent financial crisis. Taking readers back to the invention of credit-derivative obligations (CDOs) at J. P. Morgan in 1994, and the subsequent exponential growth of that market, Tett explains how credit derivatives seemed a win-win for the financial world, freeing up capital, increasing profits, and diversifying risk.

Karin says: "Excellent but with one criticism...."
    "great book"

I 'read' many audio books - sometimes I have 3 or 4 that I listen to in parallel.
There are some however that do not fit this norm, once I start those, I will not put them down and I am compelled to go to the end, this book is one of them.
This is a very well written book for the 'weekend' economist wanting to understand what is happening now.

  • Crash Proof 2.0: How to Profit from the Economic Collapse

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 55 mins)
    • By Peter D. Schiff
    • Narrated By Sean Pratt
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The economic and monetary disaster, which seasoned Wall Street prognosticator Peter Schiff warned of in the bestselling first edition of Crash Proof, is no longer hypothetical - it is here today. And while most people believe that the economic collapse is over, the reality is that it has only just begun. That's why he's returned with Crash Proof 2.0.

Michael says: "Eye opening look into the future of the US economy"

Peter does a great job of providing clarity and vision on the state of the economy. His suggestions are very relevant to the reality of the current situation.
