Fascinating insights into celebrity lifestyles and values—not just Groucho, but his Hollywood friends as well. Of course, Groucho fans will be enthralled from cover to cover.Steve Stoliar lived with Groucho and his circle for several years, right up to the end. He tells it in his own words, in his own voice, and his admiration and respect for Groucho comes through despite Groucho's warts and flaws that make everyone human. Steve is the narrator, and as he mentions in his book, there is something special about an author reading his own words. As a bonus, steve does a great job of impersonating Groucho as he was at the time of the exchange he is quoting. His Cavett voice is also perfect. So I have to assume some of the lesser-known characters are also well impersonated. It could have been tacky if done wrong, but his characterizations are spot-on.
It was like sitting down with an insider and listening to his experiences with stars, wannabe stars and their friends and family, but told without malice.
It was interesting to see how Groucho's and Erin's friends and family acted and interacted when they were at parties in Groucho's house.
Like many people, I was totally confused about who Erin Fleming was and whether she was good or bad to/for Groucho. The reader will have an opinion after reading the book.
Steve Stoliar is great guy, a great Groucho fan and a nice human being. He is someone many people would like to have as a friend.
No. Incredibly bad narration.
The other two parts of this work are just as good. Also, Churchill's own history works are fabulous.
1. The narrator's voice is harsh and lacking emotion.
2. Worst of all, when he quotes Churchill, he sounds like a male version of the Wicked Witch of the West! Incredible.
This period of Churchill's life is fully explained, especially how the rejection hurt him.
Avoid this volume if you can get a print version.
