New Year's Day is a time for new beginnings, but Minneapolis homicide detectives Sam Kovac and Nikki Liska are focused on endings: specifically, the tragic end of their latest murder victim, an unidentified young woman discovered on the side of the freeway. Believed to be the victim of a serial killer, Kovac and Liska are determined to do the girl the small justice of returning her body to her family as they investigate her case, but it is no simple task matching the broken corpse to any of the scores of missing persons reports.

Drawing strong comparisons to the work of James Lee Burke and Tony Hillerman, William Kent Krueger’s Cork O’Connor mysteries never fail to please fans. Here Cork joins the search for a country-western singer who has disappeared in the wilderness along the American/Canadian border.

Would you try another book from William Kent Krueger and/or David Chandler?

    no, two is enough.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The story line itself could have been very interesting but so much of it was predictable.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of David Chandler?

George Guidall would have been wonderful!!

Did Boundary Waters inspire you to do anything?

not try anymore of the books in this series...

    Any additional comments?

I travel a great deal and I listen to audiobooks so I'm always looking for good series books. I had high hopes for this series but I won't be listening to anymore of them. They were compared to the Longmire books which I love and have listened to twice. Maybe that comparison clouded my review, this book in no way compares to the Longmire series.....

Anthony Award-winning author William Kent Krueger crafts this riveting tale about a small Minnesota town’s ex-sheriff who is having trouble retiring his badge. Cork O’Connor loses his job after being blamed for a tragedy on the local Anishinaabe Indian reservation. But he must set aside his personal demons when a young boy goes missing on the same day a judge commits suicide—and no one but O’Connor suspects foul play.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

    Story was weak and predictable.

Would you ever listen to anything by William Kent Krueger again?

I actually tried the next book in the series.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of David Chandler?

The story might have been better with a different narrator.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    no

    Any additional comments?

I have been spoiled by listening to all of the James Lee Burke books and the Craig Johnson series.

Lucas Davenport has had disturbing cases before - but never one quite like this, in the shocking new Prey work from the #1 New York Times best-selling author.

    Story

This was a pretty decent plot but poor Richard Ferrone should never try a "valley girl" voice if that character has more than 3 lines. I read the other reviews and thought maybe they were exaggerated. They weren't! He has a great voice for male characters and the female voices are usually adequate but that Fairy voice was bad..

Heartwood is a kind of tree that grows in layers. And as Billy Bob's grandfather once told him, you do well in life by keeping the roots in a clear stream and not letting anyone taint the water for you. But in Holland's dusty little hometown of Deaf Smith, in the hill country north of Austin, local kingpin Earl Deitrich has made a fortune running roughshod and tainting anyone who stands in his way. Billy Bob has problems with Deitrich and his shamelessly callous demeanor, but can't shake the legacy of his passion for Deitrich's "heartbreak-beautiful" wife, Peggy Jean.

What made the experience of listening to Heartwood the most enjoyable?

The reader was difficult to listen to, this was an instance of listening anyway because it was book 2 of a series I enjoy.

What did you like best about this story?

The story itself was great, with plot twists I didn't see coming.

Would you be willing to try another one of Alan Sklar’s performances?

    I don't think so.
