In many ways, Carrie Parker is like any other eight-year-old: playing make-believe, dreading school, dreaming of faraway places. But even her imaginative mind can't shut out the realities of her impoverished North Carolina home or help her protect her younger sister, Emma.

I really enjoyed this book. The author captured the true essence of what trauma is all about. The narrator captured the sense of the child in that type of situation. The ending was truly unpredicted. I had a hard time putting the book down. It put me there in that very place! A disturbing but true to life story.

Winter Makepeace lives a double life. By day he's the stoic headmaster of a home for foundling children. But the night brings out a darker side of Winter. As the moon rises, so does the Ghost of St. Giles-protector, judge, fugitive. When the Ghost, beaten and wounded, is rescued by a beautiful aristocrat, Winter has no idea that his two worlds are about to collide. Lady Isabel Beckinhall enjoys nothing more than a challenge. Yet when she's asked to tutor the Home's dour manager in the ways of society, Isabel can't help wondering why his eyes seem so familiar - and his lips so tempting.

Would you listen to Thief of Shadows again? Why?

I LOVE this series. Ms Hoyt is an excellent writer. I don't necessarily listen to the same book twice, but I definitely look forward to the next in the series!

What does Ashford MacNab bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her voice is perfect for this series, she pulls you in and weaves a spell.

It was whispered all through London society that he was a murderer, that he'd spent his youth in an asylum and was not to be trusted - especially with a lady. Any woman caught in his presence was immediately ruined. Yet Beth found herself inexorably drawn to the Scottish lord whose hint of a brogue wrapped around her like silk and whose touch could draw her into a world of ecstasy.

The story was okay, more sexual than believable. How one could build a life with such a violent taciturn man is beyond me. I was distracted by the narrator's style, she reads as if each sentence is a breathless cliffhanger. I notice she does the same in the rest of the series(I checked it out and she doesn't read that way for American contemporaries!!??). And her UK accents are just atrocious. I wish it weren't so. This series needs different narrator, someone who does the accent justice before I would even try the next book in the series.

This was such a lovely find. I love books that are not bleak and depressing yet still remain hearty and thought provoking. This is one of them.
