In 1949, four Chinese women drawn together by the shadow of their past begin meeting in San Francisco to play Mah Jong, invest in stocks, eat dim sum, and "say" stories. Nearly 40 years later, one of the members has died, and her daughter has come to take her place, only to learn of her mother's lifelong wish and the tragic way in which it has come true. The revelation of this secret unleashes an urgent need among the women to reach back and remember.

Kathryn Bradley says: "Great Book, Horrible Reader"
    "Terrible Narration and Terrible Production"
    Overall

Awful. I wish I could get my money back. The production sounds terrible and the narration is awful. I've listened to many, many books and I can't finish this one.

  • Polio: An American Story

This comprehensive and gripping narrative, which received the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for history, covers all the challenges, characters, and controversies in America's relentless struggle against polio. Funded by philanthropy and grassroots contributions, Salk's killed-virus vaccine (1954) and Sabin's live-virus vaccine (1961) began to eradicate this dreaded disease.

Oshinsky's book is thoroughly researched and documented. A compelling and comprehensive history of Polio.

  • The House of Mirth

The House of Mirth was Edith Wharton's first great novel. Set among the elegant brownstones of New York City and opulent country houses like gracious Bellomont on the Hudson, the novel creates a satiric portrayal of what Wharton herself called "a society of irresponsible pleasure-seekers" with a precision comparable to that of Proust.

I regularly listen to audiobooks, and I loved every second of this one. I highly recommend it and can't wait to listen to Age of Innocence next.

  • A Walk in the Woods

After 20 years in Britain, Bryson returned to the U.S. and decided to reacquaint himself with his native country by walking the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine. This is his humorous, inspiring account.

Jeff says: "Wonderful book, but hardly abridged"
    "Okay, I guess..."
    Overall

I was quite surprised how boring this book was considering the rave reviews it got. I found the narration tediously slow and I think I missed the "funny" parts in the book. Occasionally, Bryson has an interesting 'turn of phrase' but it's not a book that will resonate with me or that I would recommend.

In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry-blonde classmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them - along with Callie's failure to develop physically - leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

Christopher Allen walker says: "Great Pulitzer Winning novel!"
    "Incredible book and excellent narration"
    Overall

I've been listening to audiobooks for more than 10 years and this is one of the best audiobooks I've ever heard. The story is fantastic and perfect for an audiobook, which is great since this narrator is one of the best I've heard. I was a bit apprehensive because the audiobook is 21 hours long, but it's such an interesting story and compelling narration that I haven't lost interest. I highly recommend this book.

  • The Hours

The Hours is the story of three women: Clarissa Vaughan, Laura Brown, and Virginia Woolf. By the end of the novel, the stories intertwine in remarkable ways, and finally come together in an act of subtle and haunting grace.

Steve says: "Very literary, intentionally slight plot"
    "Terrible Narration"
    Overall

I've listened to so many books and this narration is one of the worst I've heard. Believe what everyone says: It's terrible. It's unbelievable how Cunningham doesn't even understand the cadence of his own prose. It's like he doesn't even understand the beauty of his own words and sentences. I wish I hadn't wasted a credit on this book. I would rather have read it than listened to Cunningham butcher his own prose.

Barcelona, 1945: Just after the war, a great world city lies in shadow, nursing its wounds, and a boy named Daniel awakes on his 11th birthday to find that he can no longer remember his mother's face. To console his only child, Daniel's widowed father, an antiquarian book dealer, initiates him into the secret of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, a library tended by Barcelona's guild of rare-book dealers as a repository for books forgotten by the world, waiting for someone who will care about them again.

This book is amazing! It took a bit of time to get into it, but after I did, I couldn't put it down. It was so well-written and the narration was so wonderful. Highly recommend this one.

  • No Country for Old Men

Cormac McCarthy, best-selling author of National Book Award winner All the Pretty Horses, delivers his first new novel in seven years. Written in muscular prose, No Country for Old Men is a powerful tale of the West that moves at a blistering pace.

    Alan says: "Great story!"
    "Difficult audiobook to follow"
    Overall

There are three different points-of-view throughout the book, and McCarthy switches perspective frequently throughout the narrative, which can make it difficult to follow in audio version. I kept getting confused as to 'who did what,' which probably is much easier to keep up with in a paper-based version.
