If your expecting twilight then skip this. Oates is one of the best living writers today and would not sink to that level. A fine mixture of Princeton history and fiction. I hated to see it end.
There is something for everyone here. I really liked the Sand Kings and the stories of the genetic animal space stuff. I also liked the religion stories and the odd twists it takes in space and in the future. But I hated the hard science stuff. I could care less about a lot of the stories. All but one of the horror stories where good. Can't complain.
The parts read by Martian are also good but god what a geek this guy is. I could just see him getting his @ss kicked all over school as a kid.
Even though I skipped a dozen or so storys at 50 plus hours I still found it well worth the credit.
I love listening to audio books as I drive the WV roads delivering mail up and down the back roads. I have listened to 100s of books in my car slinging peoples junk mail. I love to start work get so engrossed in the story I forget even doing the work. (sometimes I even get the mail in the right box)
And a story like this is no exception. This is great novel and a great listen as you follow four gens out of Africa to freedom and this is where the catch is...... The N word is used about a thousand times. Really no joke. Here I am driving and working delivering electric bill and finger hut flyers and this black voice is dropping N-BOMBS out of my cars speakers every five minutes.
So listen to this alone or with people who understand the artistic use of the word.
Once a great writer of horror. He would weave story and character flawlessly. I couldnt wait till his next book came out. No more, I am done waiting on his crap. Mr. Mercedes is a joke no depth at all. Characters are flat and as boring as the story. Very original, King a retired drunken cop forced out of retirement to hunt down a serial killer. I hate you Mr. King, you have become a hack and wasted your talent. By the way Will Patton is one of the best readers maybe he should pick his material better.
Boring jump around to much. writer tries way to hard to be cute. I'd skip this crap.
Its long. Very long but worth a listen. Not a huge pay off but interesting. This novel was actually a few novels in japan. I would suggest breaking it up and listening to something in between books. Weird but relaxing.
This is the kind of book that never gets written because people want sunshine and happy endings. What ever happened to these kind of books. I recommend this all the way to people who want to listen to the raw dark under belly of America.
The bad news its official King has lost his edge. This about his fifth book in so many years that have been weak for him. The do gooder hero in this book kind of gets old. I miss Kings flawed characters.
The good news is an average Kings story is still better the most peoples best.
Dont get if you are excepting horror story's. This a collection of odd story's like kafka. Pretty decent.
This book is just fine as good as the other two. The author hasn't changed his style at all. He always wrote long flashbacks to reveal character. The whole series is based on that. The same people who whine about the cliff hangers and the long time between book releases praise the Fat Mans Fire and Ice series and he does the same thing.
I don't care for Bradbury style. He's got a good raspy voice but he over acts stressing the Dudley do right aspects of the character. Come to think about it that's one part of Brett's writing I hate is his characters kissing each others butts to much. Stop talking about how great each persons actions are Brett and let your writing stand for itself.
He should take a page out of the Fat Mans writing and knock off the self thought about every frigging thing they do.
Danny writes the review and tries to decide what the people think about his review. Maybe he was to hard on the people. He should be more like Brett's characters and express his love of the author, readers and narrator. Danny hopes he didn't offend anyone but he was abused by a fat farmer who let his mother die. Danny could give a crap less.
See my point.
Even though the story was good overall it had its low points. First the story has a few cliched characters. Worse though was the cliched beer drinking parties on the roof. Come on clinking beer bottles watching the sun going down, I mean if you really do that your a freaking loser, your a walking cliche a douce bag through and through society would be better off if you threw yourself off the roof. Anyway the worst belongs to the slow speaking pause cursed narrator. He speaks so slow I get bored, I was just about ready to give up when I upped the speed of the recording and changed my mind and finished the book. I did like the story besides the aboved mentioned.
