In 1974 the historian Fawn Brodie predicted that a "sensitive study of the Lincoln marriage will not always defy biographers". Until now, it has. The only book-length treatment of the marriage was published in 1953, when scholars lacked today's resources and were still struggling with deep-seated prejudices about Mary Todd and Abraham Lincoln. Now Daniel Mark Epstein has produced an incisive and balanced portrait of the Lincolns.

    Overall

This is an interesting book. I have read much about the Lincoln and the Civil War but never from the viewpoint of his relationship with Mary Todd. Much has been made of Mary's state of mind after the asassination of Lincoln but this shows the basis of her state of mind and her devotion to her husband.

But the real threat to their future has yet to be revealed, and when it is, the search for Ashmole 782 and its missing pages takes on even more urgency.

Terry Tempest Williams's mother told her: "I am leaving you all my journals, but you must promise me you won't look at them until after I'm gone." Fans of Williams's iconic and unconventional memoir, Refuge, well remember that mother. She was a member of a large Mormon clan in northern Utah who developed cancer as a result of the nuclear testing in nearby Nevada. It was a shock to Williams that her mother had kept journals. But not as much of a shock as what she found when the time came to read them.

This is testament to being a wife, a daughter and a woman in an age where it was difficult to know which way to go. It is about experiencing the death of all the strong women in your family and not knowing how to reconcile that with your life. I bought the book for my mother for her 85th birthday. She will love it!

In Alaska, 100 years of bad blood between the villages of Kushtaka and Kuskulana come to a boil when the body of a young Kushtaka ne'er-do-well is found wedged in a fish wheel. Sergeant Jim Chopin's prime suspect is a Kuskulana man who is already in trouble in both villages for falling in love across the river. But when the suspect disappears, members of both tribes refuse to speak to Jim. When a second murder that looks suspiciously like payback occurs, Jim has no choice but to call in Kate Shugak for help.

I really liked this book for the most part, but found it to be a review of Kate's overall story and how she got here. I know that story because I have read every one of Dana's books. I love Kate because she has guts and she isn't easily fooled by anyone. I found the murder mystery portion to have its twists. The conclusion is unexpected, however, and leaves me wanting more Kate and Mutt so Dana get busy!

I love books read by the author. The author really knows how she wants the characters to be personality-wise and understands the relationships that she built. This is a funny, sad and triumphant book. It shows that circumstance does not have to rule you and that you can change your destiny. I love the southern twist on the story.

This is the third Lisa See book I have read and my favorite. The writing is wonderful and Janet Song really makes the book come alive. The story is a life time of a woman at time when their feet and minds were both bound by tradition and culture. Did they have power? Yes but it was subtle control over their circumstances.

I never saw this movie but I am really curious about it now.

History has all but forgotten.... In the spring of 1708, an invading Jacobite fleet of French and Scottish soldiers nearly succeeded in landing the exiled James Stewart in Scotland to reclaim his crown. Now, Carrie McClelland hopes to turn that story into her next best-selling novel. Settling herself in the shadow of Slains Castle, she creates a heroine named for one of her own ancestors and starts to write. But then she discovers her novel is more fact than fiction....

I like Rosalyn Landor. She really makes a book come alive and her accent is perfect. I am a big Diana Gabaldon fan so I found this book to be an interesting twist on the same time in history. This is about a writer who writes historical novels and seems to be writing her current novel from memory. I had to start it over once after just a few chapters to really understand what was going on. The book twists back and forth between the present and the past and I was sorry to reach the end!

Having teenagers is a difficult and challenging place to be. I know I have a couple! To worry that a friend of your child is going to come along and murder your entire family is hard to fathom. I wept, cared, and thought this was a good book. Anna Quindlen can really scare you with her subjects.

I have read several other books (factual history) describing the Japanese invasions of WWII but found the human element in this book wonderful. It is a great insight into Shanghai life in the 1930's and how the invasion by Japan changed the society in Shanghai. I found the girls struggle to get to America compelling. The next book "Dreams of Joy" explains even more!
