Written in an urban vernacular that’s electrifying and intimate, On the Come Up introduces a heroine whose voice is irrepressible, dynamic, and unstintingly honest. Thirteen-year-old AnnMarie Walker dreams of a world beyond Far Rockaway, where the sway of the neighborhood keeps her tied to old ideas about success. While attending a school for pregnant teens, AnnMarie comes across a flyer advertising movie auditions in Manhattan. Astonishingly, improbably, and four months before she’s due to give birth - she lands a lead role.

Would you listen to On the Come Up again? Why?

Yes. Im sure I will read it again . It was a great book. It just seemed so realistic!!

What other book might you compare On the Come Up to and why?

Not many others. This is one book that I can actually say I didnt feel like I had already heard the storyline before. The closest book for me would probably be PUSH by Sapphire. Both are very true stories of what a lot of young minority girls go through.

Have you listened to any of Yolonda Ross’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

NO. This is my first book by Yolonda Ross but I will be looking into more of her work!!

If you could rename On the Come Up, what would you call it?

I would rename the book "I will Survive"

    Any additional comments?

This is an awesome book. Im not great at writing reviews but I reasure you that you will not be dissapointed!!!

For the newly freed black residents of Colfax, Louisiana, the beginning of Reconstruction promised the right to vote, to own property, and, at the very least, control over their own lives. However, in the space of a day, angry whites took back Colfax in one of the most brutal incidents of racial violence in Southern history. Now, in the bitter aftermath, the Tademys and the Smiths will have to deal with the wreckage, push on, and build a better life for their sons and daughters over the next 70 years.

BJ, a trademark McMillan heroine, already has her hands full dealing with her other adult children, two opinionated sisters, an ill husband, and her own postponed dreams - all while holding down a job as a hotel maid. Why we think it’s a great listen: A masterpiece like none other, Brooks’ powerful performance of Haley’s words has been known to leave listeners in tears. It begins with a birth in an African village in 1750, and ends two centuries later at a funeral in Arkansas. And in that time span, an unforgettable cast of men, women, and children come to life, many of them based on the people from Alex Haley's own family tree.

Delores Phillips' heart-rending debut novel is set in 1950s Georgia where most of Rozelle Quinn's 10 children can pass as white. Her brightest child, Tangy Mae, however, has the darkest skin of them all, and she longs to continue her education. But Rozelle thinks it's time for 13-year-old Tangy Mae to follow in her own footsteps and earn money "cleaning for whites" and bedding men at the "Farmhouse."

I would take Tan out. She is intelligent and I would love to teach her so much more!
