This book was obviously very well researched. I listened with my driving companion while traveling on a long car trip and we both enjoyed it very much. I was expecting more suspense, although suspense did build somewhat toward the end. I expected it to be more like "Unbroken," than it turned out to be, but it was still a story that begged to be told. It is hard to imagine how ordinary people can endure so much---It makes me think that Tom Brokaw was right about the greatest generation. WWII history buffs should not miss this book.
Detective fiction, set in the UK is my favorite genre, and JK Rowling really nailed it! Great story, characters, and performance. Hoping for at least a sequel, if not a series!
I bought this book mainly due to the large number of positive reviews, and the fact that it has some medical history in it, which I enjoy reading about. My main problem with this book is that the characters were totally unlikeable, particularly Mary. I had to force myself to finish it because I didn't want to waste my credit.
Edoardo Ballerini did a fine job, but I doubt I would try another book from this author.
Something more contemporary and shorter than this one.
It's hard to choose, as I could never get invested in any of the characters.
Absolutely not! I made it through the first part and well into the second, and I still was unable to really care what happened. I'm only mildly curious to know what happened to Rachel, but not enough to listen any longer.
Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres, and I was really looking forward to a great listen after reading all the positive reviews. I guess I should have read on for the not-so-positive reviews, because they all hit the nail on the head as far as I'm concerned----this novel plods along, and I kept hoping something would happen to make me care about some of the characters, but I was disappointed. There is no way I would have gotten nearly so far into this book if I were reading the print version, I would no doubt have thrown in the towel after a couple of chapters. The good news is I didn't waste a credit on this----I got it on sale.
Yes I would recommend. I was a bit disappointed that I didn't enjoy it as much as A Discovery of Witches. Historical details were interesting to me, but the whole book seemed to lack the suspense of the first. Some of the characters and relationships between them and 1600's Matthew seemed a little too convenient.
The obvious comparison is to its predecessor, A Discovery of Witches.
She did a great job with all the voices, my favorites were Diana and Matthew.
Although this book did not live up to the first for me, it was still very good, and I will anxiously await the next installment.
