I am amazed at the negative reviews of this book! I think this historical fiction series is absolutely wonderful, highly educational, i.e., medieval culture with witches, vampires etc. thrown in for fun - although in medieval times, it wasn't much fun for the poor souls who were burned at the stake. It’s a winning mix and I highly recommend the series. I can’t wait for the third book to come out! What a great way to learn about other times and places. But then, I enjoy historical fiction because I have such a need to learn while I am being entertained.
Talk about suspense?!! I clenched my fists, held my breath, and agonised so much so that I just had to bookmark and skip to the last paragraph to see if they made it. I then went back to my bookmarked point and continued to clench my fists and forget to breathe. Daniel York does a fantastic job of narrating! His pronunciation of all those Asian names was impressive. I did stop to eat and sleep at night but other than that, I read this in one sitting. Superb!!!
This is a story of suffering and tragedy, and we should all open our eyes to what is happening to our fellow humans. Unfortunately, the author, Blaine Harden, has little talent for the craft of writing, and absolutely NIL talent for narrating. Granted, it was like pulling teeth to get Shin to open up and tell Harden anything and we are lucky get some semblance of coherence once pen was put to paper. With good editing and a professional narrator, this could have been a best seller and Shin and the author would have gained much needed funds. Having said that, I still recommend you add this to your list of “must reads”. Just be prepared to suffer through (in union with suffering humanity?) the worst narration on the planet.
This story leaves me yawning and my mind wandering. Even the narrator gave up trying to do something with it. All the character voices sound the same. The "My fiancé" line is used ad nauseam.
Victoria, for your information, U.S. $1,000,000.00 equals Can.$ 915,818.20 at today’s rate (August 08, 2014). Not quite at par but close. In this case you would round up, not down to half a million. https://www.google.ca/#q=1%2C000%2C000+canadian+dollars+equals+how+many+u.s.+dollars%3F
If you are straddling the fence as to “should I or shouldn’t I” eat a high fat diet, read this for some definitive answers. It seems to me that, nutritionally, we are living in primitive times. Nina Teicholz, along with a growing body of intelligent, concerned intellectuals, is taking us one more step towards enlightenment. We have got to do something about the obesity and diabetes epidemic and Nina has certainly done her bit towards that end. Highly recommended!
This is a small work that packs a great deal of history. As one on the outside looking in, I never could understand why the U.S. government is so dysfunctional. Now I know. President Obama was right when he said, “We are not a red state and a blue state”, but wrong when he said, “we are the united states of America”. According to this author, the U.S. is made up of a number of “nations” so diametrically opposed to each other that they just can’t find a way to get along. Being of Scottish, Irish and French descent, I’ve always known that my Scots/Irish ancestors were a wild bunch, but, heavens to betsy, they sure have made a mess throughout history in the U.S. Between ethnic tensions, religion, racial discrimination and greed, it’s hard to see how U.S. citizens can untangle themselves from the knotted skein that is throttling them.
I listened to this book almost non-stop and was very sorry when it came to an end. The narrator could have read a little slower as there was so much I wanted to savor. I will listen to it again very soon.
My God, this is a beautiful story! You will laugh, you will cry, and you will have very deep thoughts.
Because I loved the Tamir series so much, I went ahead and bought the first two books in this series. I have plodded my way through the first half of the first book and the narrator is driving me CRAZY! What a disaster! I simply cannot go further. For heaven's sake, who chose this man? I have been so distracted from the story that I couldn't give an honest review of the characters or plot. SAVE YOUR MONEY.
This is a great book! Could not put it down. The battle going on between two ideologies in America today is comparable to a war, with al that that implies. Jonathan Alter's description of the battle between the center and the right is riveting! There is as yet, no clear winner. Only history will tell.
This is the story of a young girl placed in a foster home on Himmel (Heaven) Street, Munich, Germany, just before WW2. Although they are poor and the foster mother swears like a heathen, it is a place of love in the midst of ignorance. I will not tell you who the story teller is but you will be surprised - at least I was. You will cry, you will laugh, but most of all you will be buoyed by the courage of the human spirit! Listen to this story. You will not be disappointed.
