When her husband is offered a post at a small northwestern university, Maye Roberts is only too happy to pack up and leave the relentless Phoenix heat for the lush green quietude of Spaulding, Washington. But when you're a childless 30-something freelance writer who works at home, making new friends can be quite a challenge. Her attempts to do so lead her to enter a kooky beauty pageant - and to uncover a sinister mystery.

    "Surprisingly un-funny"
    Overall

I don't understand, I usually enjoy Laurie Notaro. However I found the humor very contrived, and the story boring. I gave up after a few chapters, so maybe the end is better.

Grace Stanton’s life as a rising media star and beloved lifestyle blogger takes a surprising turn when she catches her husband cheating and torpedoes his pricey sports car straight into the family swimming pool. Grace suddenly finds herself locked out of her palatial home, checking account, and even the blog she has worked so hard to develop in her signature style. Moving in with her widowed mother, who owns and lives above a rundown beach bar called The Sandbox, is less than ideal. So is attending court-mandated weekly "divorce recovery" therapy sessions with three other women and one man for whom betrayal seems to be the only commonality. When their “divorce coach” starts to act suspiciously, they decide to start having their own Wednesday "Ladies' Night" sessions at The Sandbox, and the unanticipated bonds that develop lead the members of the group to try and find closure in ways they never imagined. Can Grace figure out a new way home and discover how strong she needs to be to get there?

What did you like best about Ladies' Night? What did you like least?

I was looking for a light and frothy listen, and I did get that. However most of the plot happened as a result of our heroine making really stupid choices. Yes, a truly jerky ex-husband done her wrong, but she didn't help anything. Plus she continued to make stupid choices. If it had been a book I would have skimmed quickly to the end. As it was it was just good enough to have me finish listening to the end. Just barely.

Also the our heroine seemed to switch back and forth between competent and clueless and charming and whiny.

I did like the whole lifestyle blog thread in the book.

Have you listened to any of Kathleen McInerney’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

The reader probably did fine. I found some of the voices annoying, but that could have been just because I found some of the characters annoying.

Into Williams's childhood home-a one-story ranch house-his father crammed more books than the local library could hold. "Pappy" used some of these volumes to run an academic prep service; the rest he used in his unending pursuit of wisdom. His son's pursuits were quite different: "money, hoes, and clothes."

jason says: "The book is awful and so is anyone who praises it."
    "A window into another culture"
    Overall

As a suburban 50 year old white woman I really appreciated the insider's view into the hip-hop culture. Fascinating and very easy to listen to. I have purchased the book for my kids because not only do you learn about hip-hop, there is also a lot of thought about how we choose to live our lives (not surprising given that the author is a philosopher).

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

"One of the best I've listened to"

This ranks among the top audio-books I've listened too, and I've been a member of audible for years. Excellent writing, story, and characters. The narration was perfect and added so much to the story.

    "Wonderful story, beautifully read!"
    Overall

This is a book with a main character you really can cheer for. It is very entertaining, despite the very tragic things that happen to our hero. Kerry Shale, who narrates, is wonderful. And the ending is great. I highly recommend this book!

This is a journey of both escape and discovery for four exquisitely different women, a month of bliss and privacy for four weary souls. Their refuge on the Italian Riviera provides the perfect backdrop for a story about the search for spiritual harmony within and without.

This was a pleasure to listen to. Beautifully written, and narrated, with wry humor and insight. I highly recommend it, especially if you are tired of listening to books filled with angst.
