After their adventures on the high seas, Locke and Jean are brought back to earth with a thump. Jean is mourning the loss of his lover, and Locke must live with the fallout of crossing the all-powerful magical assassins the Bonds Magi. It is a fall-out that will pit both men against Locke's own long-lost love. Sabetha is Locke's childhood sweetheart, the love of Locke's life, and now it is time for them to meet again. Employed on different sides of a vicious dispute between factions of the Bonds, Sabetha has just one goal-to destroy Locke forever.

David says: "A transition and a preface"
"Great F#ckery! Lynch did it again!"
What did you love best about The Republic of Thieves?

The book is cleverly written and cleverly done. I really enjoyed the flashbacks that shed light on some of the decisions the characters make.

    Any additional comments?

It may take Scott a lot of time to complete his books, but they are defiantly worth the wait.

  • Hard Magic: Book I of the Grimnoir Chronicles

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 59 mins)
    • By Larry Correia
    • Narrated By Bronson Pinchot

Jake Sullivan is a licensed private eye with a seriously hardboiled attitude. He also possesses raw magical talent and the ability to make objects in his vicinity light as a feather or as heavy as depleted uranium, all with a magical thought. It's no wonder the G-men turn to Jake when they need someoneto go after a suspected killer who has been knocking off banks in a magic-enhanced crime spree.

Clinton says: "Not what I thought it was going to be."
"AWESOME! Perfect combination of humor and gore!"
Would you consider the audio edition of Hard Magic to be better than the print version?

Absolutely, this is one of the best narrated audiobooks I've ever listened to. His accents bring all the characters to life.

What other book might you compare Hard Magic to and why?

Joe Abercrombie's First Law series comes to mind. The lead character Jake Sullivan reminds me of 'The Blood Nine".

  • Elseerian: The Chronicles of Lumineia, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 10 mins)
    • By Ben Hale
    • Narrated By Derek Perkins
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The assassination of heroes was once a warning... for an invasion that nearly destroyed the world. Nations were slaughtered, cities were erased from existence, and defending armies were crushed into oblivion. In weeks, all life stood on the verge of extinction. But the end did not come. Instead the black horde vanished, leaving terrified survivors... and rumors. As the centuries passed the holocaust faded into legend, and finally myth. Across the southern sea a gifted young man is completing his training.

Andrew Stone says: "Loved this book!"
    "Great Start!"
    Any additional comments?

I love this type of epic fantasy series. Reminded me a lot of the Wheel of Time series but condensed.

  • The Sum of All Men: The Runelords, Book One

    • UNABRIDGED (22 hrs)
    • By David Farland
    • Narrated By Ray Porter

Young Prince Gaborn of Mystarria is traveling in disguise on a journey to ask for the hand of the lovely Princess Iome of Sylvarresta. Armed with his gifts of strength and perception, the prince and his bodyguard stop at a local tavern, where they spot a pair of assassins who have their sights set on Princess Iome's father. As they race to warn the king, they realize that more than the royal family is at risk - the very fate of the Earth is in jeopardy.

Lore says: "A world of interesting magics and moral choices."
"Cool magic system, Heavy Socialist overtone"
Would you try another book from David Farland and/or Ray Porter?

I will pass on any further Farland books. I consider myself an individualist and much of the first 3 Runelords books centered around sacrificing the self for the greater good of the collective. The whole magic system is built around this premise. That being said, the book was still well written and entertaining in many parts.
Ray Porter is a great narrator. No complaints.
