After the collapse of civilization, when the social fabric of America has come apart in bloody rags, when every man's hand is raised against another, and only the strong survive. "Jeebee" Walther was a scientist, a student of human behavior, who saw the Collapse of the world economy coming, but could do nothing to stop it. Now he must make his way across a violent and lawless America, in search of a refuge where he can keep the spark of knowledge alive in the coming Dark Age.

The story is good. The characters are well explained. However when he describes how to do some menial task he goes into such detail, it's as though he is writing directions to the task at hand. He does this in almost all of the small tasks as though it will increase the time of the book. It only increases frustration. Other areas where more detail begs for description and is not mentioned.

We live in a world that's very different from the one in which Emily Post came of age. Many of us who are nice (but who also sometimes say "f*ck") are frequently at a loss for guidelines about how to be a good person who deals effectively with the onslaught of rudeness we all encounter. To lead us through this this miasma of modern manners, syndicated columnist Amy Alkon - The Advice Goddess - gives us a new set of manners for our 21st-century lives.

I've not read any of Carrington's books, but I'll be looking for them now. I would recommend this to everyone. The obvious is pointed out if only folks would follow the lead to advance the civility in our society. Manners goes far beyond the dinner table. I thought of this as I went through the market today and listened to a fool on his cell phone telling the world how upset he was.

Everyone wants to escape their boring, stagnant lives full of inertia and regret. But so few people actually have the bravery to run - run away from everything and selflessly seek out personal fulfillment on the other side of the world where they don’t understand anything and won’t be expected to. The world is full of cowards. Tim Anderson was pushing 30 and working a string of dead-end jobs when he made the spontaneous decision to pack his bags and move to Japan.

This is a homosexual's view of Japan. He makes no explanation nor expects any recriminations. He is simply teaching English to non-English speakers and learning Nipponese while doing so. I thought perhaps this might be humorous, but it wasn't.

Whatever You Do, Don't Run is a hilarious collection of true tales from top safari guide Peter Allison. In a place where the wrong behavior could get you eaten, Allison has survived face-to-face encounters with big cats, angry elephants, and the world's most unpredictable animals: herds of untamed tourists and foolhardy guides whose outrageous antics sometimes make them even more dangerous than a pride of hungry lions!

I anticipated a entertaining romp through Africa regaled with funny stories of peoples foolish antics while trying to capture wildlife in nature. What I got was a dull story of Botswana Safari Guide being foolish and not even being entertaining in the bargain. Since he has given up guiding, sure hope he's not planning on a writing career.

  • If This Isn't Nice, What Is: Advice for the Young

Master storyteller and satirist Kurt Vonnegut was one of the most in-demand commencement speakers of his time. For each occasion, Vonnegut’s words were unfailingly unique, insightful, and witty, and they stayed with audience members long after graduation. As edited by Dan Wakefield, this book reads like a narrative in the unique voice that made Vonnegut a hero to readers and listeners of all ages. At times hilarious, razor-sharp, freewheeling, and deeply serious, these reflections are ideal for anyone undergoing what Vonnegut would call their "long-delayed puberty ceremony".

I found myself wondering what type of society could create such entertainment and wonder if we are indeeed headed in that direction. This book will make you think and wonder.

In a pulls-no-punches essay intended to provoke rational discussion, Stephen King sets down his thoughts about gun violence in America. Anger and grief in the wake of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School are palpable in this urgent piece of writing, but no less remarkable are King's keen thoughtfulness and composure as he explores the contours of the gun-control issue and constructs his argument for what can and should be done.

Like most liberals; King believes the world will just naturally fall in line and be good little boys and girls and the rest of us should trust them and our Government with our lives. He dosen't believe the greatest danger is from our own Government. He believes we don't need and 30 round magazines to shoot deer or home invaders and he's right. deer rarely shoot back and criminals who invade our homes usually come and go rather quickly. The gentlemen who penned the second ammendment saw a real danger from the old addage
" Power corrupts" and the Obama administration is one of the best examples since Bill Clinton or Richard Nixon. The Government already has planes, tanks, ships and bombs. Don't take what little defense we have, Mr. King......

Hawthorne approached the Romantic notion of the ability of science to destroy art (or beauty) in the form of fictive "horror stories" of biological research out of control. This story is the best of that group. A devoted scientist marries a beautiful woman with a single physical flaw: a birthmark on her face. Aylmer becomes obsessed with the imperfection and his attempts to remove it via his scientific skills, thus rendering his bride perfect.
