The tiny kingdom of Yurt is the perfect place - or so it seems - for someone who barely managed to graduate from the wizards' school, especially after all that embarrassment with the frogs. But Daimbert, newly hired Royal Wizard of Yurt, senses an evil spell at work. But who could be responsible? The beautiful young queen? Her flighty aunt? The dour chaplain? The old, retired Royal Wizard, who seems to know more than he's saying? Or someone from out of the castle's past?

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A better narrator. The second audio file not skipping a number of chapters

What did you like best about this story?

It's an interesting take on detective fantasy

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The narrator does not have a good voice for characters nor for audiobook narration as a whole.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disappointment

    Any additional comments?

    2nd file possibly corrupt

Vaelin Al Sorna, warrior of the Sixth Order, called Darkblade, called Hope Killer. The greatest warrior of his day, and witness to the greatest defeat of his nation: King Janus' vision of a Greater Unified Realm drowned in the blood of brave men fighting for a cause Vaelin alone knows was forged from a lie. Sick at heart, he comes home, determined to kill no more. Named Tower Lord of the Northern Reaches by King Janus's grateful heir, he can perhaps find peace in a colder, more remote land far from the intrigues of a troubled Realm.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

If the author had not done a complete 180 from Blood Song

What was most disappointing about Anthony Ryan’s story?

    See above

Have you listened to any of Steven Brand’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    About the same

What character would you cut from Tower Lord?

    Reva

    Any additional comments?

Thanks for killing any enthusiasm I had for this series.

"Don't you hate it when this happens?" That's what the business card asks Jonny X67, dream architect to the rich and jaded. It's all the thieves who stole his house left behind. And as if that weren't bad enough, a saleswoman named Caroline E61 drops from the sky to sell him a set of encyclopedias and won't take no for an answer. Can his luck get any worse?

    Overall

Tries to be Pratchett-ish, Adams-ish but doesn't have the narrative wit. F-bombing does not humor make.
