Beyond the sparkling Hawaiian beaches, masked by the deceptive beauty of the rainforest, evil awaits 16-year-old Michael Sundquist and his mother, Katharine, an anthropologist who has come to the Islands to study the unusual skeletal remains unearthed on the volcanic flanks of Haleakala, Maui.

I must say usually the back drop of a story is of little interest to me. In this story however it plays a pivotal role. I liked the clean family fun thrill. I liked the characters especially the juvenile delinquent wannabe who is trying to cope with an abusive drunk parent. Little science so I could simply sit back and enjoy the ability of the narrator.

All in alvl a good Saturday afternoon read/listen and everything one would expect from Saul.

Peter Galvin was just 17 when Tracy Whitland - the love of his life - vanished without a trace. In the years after her death, he had finally moved on, gotten married, started a family. He is content with his life now - happy, even - until Tracy suddenly and inexplicably returns.

As I said, I first saw the TV series then found these three books for free on audible and I was delighted. These are short stories, each depicting the return of one person and the impact it has.

The narrator is very cool and calm in his story telling method which adds to the over all chilling effect of the stories.

That said, I found these stories to be very dark and for now, although I think this is a brilliant way to promote the full length novel, I will wait a bit before I buy the novel.

The TV series, although dark enough does not really convey the start reality of what it is like to have a loved one return from the dead, in that aspect these books should get a 5* rating for in these stories that reality is all too clear. Unfortunately the narrator is so good at his job that these stories, although I did not listen to them one after the other left me drained.

If dark and gloomy is your thing, then you will adore this. If not, why not give these a try in anyway they are free after all.

Fly to the stars in your very own rocket ship. Wave at the mean, green Martians. Picnic with Moon Men. Play tag with the comets. Win a blue ribbon space race. Just before your bedtime. Inspired by the palette of Vincent van Gogh, let's go on a colorful space journey as we explore the colors and planets in our solar system through the power and wonder of a child's whimsical imagination.

    Story

This is an extremely short story for very small children. If a thunderstorm starts our hero gets into a space ship and Zwoosh around our galaxy waving at the fifteen fingered moon dwellers.

The narrator and author is the same and I find that Marie has a clear voice, her calm in telling this particular story is obvious and I think awesome since I think the book will well serve parents who have children who is afraid of thunderstorms. I really loved the little story and I am sure your little one will as well.

Also the act of listening to a narrated story in and off itself is always calming and I cannot see how this book could fail to achieve what it was written for...to calm and ignite the imagination.

The Boots My Mother Gave Me explores the dynamics of abuse and dysfunction, the courage to overcome, the strength in sisterhood, and the ongoing conflict and unconditional love between mothers and daughters. Climb into Charlene the Chevelle for a fast-paced story about a girl who is tough enough to survive and tender enough to learn to trust in love.

    Story

I listened to the audio book of The Boots My Mother Gave Me. I was addicted from the start.
Usually I would not advise an author to narrate their own audio books but as a singer and a professional in this business, Brooklyn could not have done better. This is an amazing story about a father and his daughter and the dysfunctional part of having a father that is an alcoholic and who was so tortured himself that he does not know how to relate to the people in his life.
It is a story of trust. It is a story of betrayal and a story of love. Although it has some romance to it the story is not about romance but about how failed relationships shape expectations for future relationships.
The audio book is a first for me in as far as it has a musical soundtrack to accompany it. These songs/tracts are sung by the author herself and it may not be for all but my one biggest complaint against the incorporation of these songs into the productions was this ---THEY WERE MOSTLY ONLY SNIPPETS -- leaving me wanting more. Craving more and it worked wonders to show the main characters naive notions on the one hand against her world weary well earned mistrust on the other. This was totally brilliant. The second and more important facet of this audio book was that the author wrote a true story in fictional context and her voice became Harley's giving the book a feeling of intimacy second to none. I stand in awe.
Now the main character in this book is Harley LeBeau. Her direct family and the boy next door Miah. All in all these 5 people are pivotal to the story but towards the theme of the story lies this basic truth. Parents teach their children via behaviour and the fact that Harley's mother coped with the abuse, the fact that her father is hot and cold in his affection. Physically and mentally abusive. Cognitively absent from the rearing of his children and the running of his household, all of these were crystal clear and achingly truthful in its telling of the story.
All in all, this is a story I will recommend to all. A story that you should, possibly must read...

In the heart of Atlanta, the Michaluk virus has escaped the CDC, and its effects are widespread and devastating. The virus infects nearly everyone in its path, turning much of the population of the southeastern United States into homicidal cannibals. As society rapidly crumbles under the hordes of infected, three people – Ethan Bennett, a Memphis police officer; Cade Alton, his best friend and former IDF sharpshooter; and Brandt Evans, a lieutenant in the US Marines – band together against the oncoming crush of death and terror sweeping across the world.

The Becoming on audio by Jessica Meighs
An interesting story which I think has a lot of potential to become a really good series. A bit predictable the fact that one of the series darlings get killed off very early in the story gave it a bit of a Martin air but this did not keep up and in the end it was much like reading a good old favourite.
It felt comfortable in its predictability.
I think if you have a love for post apocalyptic worlds, then this one will do well on your audio device.

    A good catch.
This is not my first Michael Connely book and it will not be my last.
I listeed to this on audio and our main protagonist, the receiver of a heart of a murder victim gets tagged-along in organized crime and he takes the reader with him.

The pace is fast. The secondarycharacters cool and engaging and the little romance the book has adds to the plot.

A mustread if you love this genre!

I must say, I enjoyed this book far more than I expected too. Mara is a bit of a whiny little witch. She seems to wait to be saved by everybody until it becomes clear that she is not going to be saved if she does not save herself. But....she has a friend. Gus. I adore Gus. He is fun, flamboyant. And totally outrageously addictively gay.

The start of the book is very slow, the middle is well....the middle and the end goes at a break neck speed full of sex, hexing and ghosts and most of the time, especially at the start the book had me in stitches. Gus is truly a riot and I absolutely adore him.

I cannot really tell you guys why I enjoyed it as much as I did. It might have a lot to do with Marie Rose, the narrator who did a brilliant job with this book. It might be Gus. It might be that it was far better than I expected. Who knows.

In the end I cannot wait to listen to more in this series and more books narrated by Marie Rose

A continuation of the serendipitous saga commenced in Raving Violet, Valerie Gilbert’s first non-fiction collection of short stories, Memories, Dreams & Deflections: My Odyssey Through Emotional Indigestion, picks up the sojourn of this sassy, single mystic, mired in her mind and cloistered above the streets of New York City. This volume explores Valerie’s intrepid and irreverent search for healing inside and out (both medical and mystical), the quest for peace (and quiet) and, as always, true love.

This is the second book I have listened to by this author.
Although I do not agree with her taken on love, life and misery case in point a contract of souls between murderer and victim I found that in this book in particular much of what she has to say makes sense.
No fluff no sex in the city although in my minds eye I did call up Carry Bradshaw in Manhatten while listening to this. Much of the musings of Carry and Valerie has one thing in common - how life influence us and we it.
I did not listen to this book all in one go. Certain sections like the chapter on tort reform was at first glance not a perfect fit in this compilation until near the end when the authors passion comes out loud and clear and you realize...oh heck. Naturally. Media influence all we do. This particular chapter was facinating.
Other chapters like where the author meets her ex-husband in a park after a few years and loves everything about him, not because he has turned into the perfect man or because she got high..rather because of what she learned from him, took from their time together was sweet and funny.

The narrator and author is one and the same and although this is a thing I would discourage most, this woman has classical training and the clarity and obvious vested interest she brings to the production is clear.

I would not hesitate to listen to more books narrated and or penned by this gifted author.
