When the book was finished, I felt a sense of completion. The author brought it all together in the end. Yet, even with the comfortable finish of "completion", there we're many avenues left for the creative mind to follow and take their time. I'm waiting for the big thaw to put my two cents worth of literary finesse into an alternate finish to the book. I'M NOT WORTHY, I'M NOT WORTHY!!!!
"HARD MAGIC", because it is the first book in the series and you just have to give major credit to the author for coming up with the funniest and well read( by the narrator) character in all three books combined. Who is this person? Of course, non other than the dung heap ,red neck, devil child: Miss Sally Fae Viero!!!! Nuff Said!
I would not have gotten through the first chapter if not for Bronson Pinchot. Seriously, this guy sound like the 1930's, carries all the accents for a pile of characters and makes you believe that "this" is the world we live in. Bronson is right up there with James Marsters of Bufy fame and his simply amazing work on all of "Jim Butchers", "Dresden Files" novels. Best books on the planet of course.
YES, Because I listened to the first two books hidden away from the world. I'm sure this book will take me on a long needed vacation like the other two did quite nicely.
Getting "into" the story and it's characters was actually FUN! Just the concept of derigables as our best and fastest form of transportation was a HOOT, not to mention the footnotes or beginning of chapters with long quotes from now dead important political, science and progressive historical stand outs with a slightly different message than the one's originally put to paper with ink and an important seal of some kind. But these alternative view points are exactly what would have been said, recorded and written down if our country had gone through the same situation.
White Night is just another "knock your socks off" addition to the best audio book collection in any series or genre-"The Dresden Files" by Jim Butcher. Remember I said "audio book collection". Without the extreme mastery of James Marsters as narrator you would get the Master Composer's pages of notes, with NO orchestra to play them. Don't get me wrong, Jim Butcher is an amazing "read", but nothing compares to the team of Butcher and Marsters. PLEASE start listening to this series from the first book. Jumping in some where in the middle will just leave you with questions and confusion. This is a series to be listened to and savored. In the world of audio book entertainment, you WILL NOT find a better blending of writer and reader. Only Jim Dale of the "Harry Potter" audio series even comes close.
James Marsters IS Harry Dresden and feels like an old friend. By far this is the BEST team of writer and narrator in ANY fantasy/thriller genre. Marsters is a genius who is channeling the words, characters, amazing storyline and emotional roller coaster ride of another GENIUS!
I only purchased the first book in my now huge collection of audio books because James Marsters (who played "Spike" on Buffy the Vampire Slayer) was listed as the narrator. I liked the television show "The Dresden Files" and after it was unfortunately cancelled, I looked into the writer that the show was based on. This was my initiation into the world of the digital audio book. I bought the first book "Storm Front" and immediately sold my soul.
"Spike" was no where to be found. But I did find Harry Dresden, the man, the wizard and how to watch a blockbuster movie in my head. James Marsters is the ONLY narrator who can read the Dresden Files series of books. Every character has their own personality, voice and moods you can both hear and feel. He brings it all to the table, and what a feast his talent brings to the mastery of writing that is Jim Butcher.
So far it's been ONLY James Marsters reading of Jim Butcher's work that keeps me buying his work on Audible.com
Jim and James are the absolute best team in today's audio book market, and you can take that to the bank.
"How do you fight a war and win in the Queendom of evil faeries?.....Throw a Wizard, a Cop and a Chicago land Mob Boss at 'em, that's how"!
I just read another review of the new Harry Dresden book "Ghost". Is it really true that James Marsters will not be the narrator?! If this is true, it's over for me, Jim Butcher and the rest of the series. This happened to listeners of the Laurell K. Hamilton "Anita Blake-Vampire Hunter" series of audio books. The first ten books were amazing! Both writer and narrator "Kimberly Alexis" had a groove going that had you whimpering for more.
What happened? First the writing took a serious downward swing, and then the "death blow". They changed narrators, twice! I did take a chance on the 11th book and the new narrator. What can I say but " A miss and a swing from the rookie". This lady could not do a French accent if she had a gun to her head. She whined and groaned through sixteen hours I'll never get back, not to mention the money.
This goes out to Audible.com and it's competitors. The world of people who will buy and buy and buy audio books are incredibly loyal customers. Not just anyone can read a book out loud and bring the listener along for the ride. As this type of entertainment grows, only the most talented teams of writers and narrators will prevail. We are a new kind of audience, so don't mess with us. Give us your best and we will give you our hard earned money for a product that is an actual necessity for some and a godsend for others.
"Burnt offerings", Book 7 of L.K.H.'s "Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Series" brings Anita, Jean Claude, Richard Zeeman, loyal werewolves and were-leopards against the Nightmare of the infamous "Vampire Council". This book, especially in audible.com format is a real ride. Richard and Anita are fighting, "The Circus of the Dammed" has been taken over by the "Council" and it's pick of hostages for their horrific brand of entertainment and Jean Claude's past catches up with him.
As with all the first nine "Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Series" on audible.com books, I listen to them over and over again. Many people have complained about the music and sound effects that come up once in a while during the listen. I listen both on my computer (5 speakers), and on my Android smart phone. The difference is HUGE. Alexis sounds smoother (if that's even possible), the music and sound effects really add to the performance and bring up emotion at critical moments on my computer system.
Most people who do not like the added material are listening to the books on smart phones or MP3 players. I must say, the experience is sad in comparison. Kimberly Alexis (through no fault of her own), sounds a bit high pitched and hollow, but her talent alone saves this kind of audio format. I have to agree that the added sound and music for some reason is so loud on any and all portable devices, it makes you turn down the volume (where you can't here the narrator), or just pull out the ear buds or head phones until it's over.
I hope the people who are complaining will listen to at least one of the books on computer speakers. Even a basic set of two will prove my point about the enhanced experience with music and gunshots.
Hamilton and Alexis are a perfect team of writer and performer. Together they bring "Burnt Offerings" to life in all it's gritty tough as nails,"Anita" against the monsters she hates and holding her own with the monsters she loves in her own twisted way.Great Book!
First, Laurell K. Hamilton is a one of kind, incredible writer. Her ability to bring modern day America into all that is supernatural and make the meshing feel normal, and believable, like a "must see" police action drama/thriller, big screen movie or number one television series, shows much more than raw talent and imagination. Hamilton's first Nine (9) books in audio format are nothing short of amazing. Presently there are twenty (20) L.K.H. "Anita Blake,Vampire Hunter Series" installments.
I am a disabled Marine Veteran from the second year into our war with Iraq. Having lost an arm to the shoulder and most of one leg, it is pretty much impossible to read a regular book. My favorite, flirty nurse set me up with audible.com and the first "Anita Blake", L.K.H. audio book, "Guilty Pleasures".
Less than ten minutes into the book on my computer and it was like watching a great movie that lived up to all the hype. The Narrator, Kimberly Alexis, is nothing short of CREATIVE GENIUS. How does a person describe a symphony in mere words. Kimberly Alexis actually channels written words into living, breathing works of a Master Painter. The timing and cadence as she reads can bring up a soft breeze, filled with scents and sounds. Alexis changes voices with fluidity of quick silver or bending light. Every character's voice tells the listener all they need to know about their fictional lives, politics, religion, style and every subtle or overt mood. Kimberly Alexis does many different men, women and a host of monsters in all their confidence, foolish bravery, loyalty, friendship, love and their underlying needs, intentions, fears, hatred, bigotry and naked, human shame.
When the action comes, it hits hard and fast. Alexis turns that cool breeze into a firestorm! Her intensity ebbs and flows like the thrusts and parries of a bloody sword fight to the death. Makes me sweat, curse & worry.
Books #1- #9 are amazing. The next 11books are mainly bad XXX porn. L.K.H. ruins "Anita".
