This is the promise of The Advantage, Patrick Lencioni’s bold manifesto about the most unexploited opportunity in modern business. In his immensely readable and accessible style, Lencioni makes the case that there is no better way to achieve profound improvement in an organization than by attacking the root causes of dysfunction, politics, and confusion.

In my opinion Lencioni's model for a healthy organization is very good! The audible read is well done, and read by the author himself. Lencioni reads well. I had listened to some of his talks on youtube, so was especially glad to hear him read his own book. Lencioni states the premise of his book thusly: "The single greatest advantage any company can achieve is organizational health. Yet it is ignored by most leaders even though it is simple, free, and available to anyone who wants it." I am a pastor of a Presbyterian Church, and although there are significant differences in a church and business and what makes them healthy, nevertheless, the church functions as an organization in part, and much of what Lencioni says is as applicable to the church in that respect as to other organizations. Because the "leadership team" of churches -- especially smaller and middle-sized churches -- is scattered throughout the week, some of his comments about "meetings" are not feasible; but others are very significant. This book brings together the models presented in several business fables Lencioni has written, and I personally am very appreciative of both the fables and this compilation of his thought. I highly commend it.

A lifelong pursuit of knowing God should embody the Christian's existence. According to eminent theologian J.I. Packer, however, Christians have become enchanted by modern skepticism and have joined the "gigantic conspiracy of misdirection" by failing to put first things first. Knowing God aims to redirect our attention to the simple, deep truth that to know God is to love His Word.

I have read Knowing God more than once, but quite a while ago. Getting an Audible presentation of it reminded me how incredibly rich and practical Packer's exposition of the character and ways of God really is. It is a tremendous book, solidly based on the Bible, and with wisdom not often found among the myriad of modern authors. The church of our day deeply needs the truths so well expounded in this book, as well as the rich practical application Packer makes. J. I. Packer is British, and Simon Vance, the narrator, is apparently British as well, and does a wonderful job presenting Knowing God. Anyone who has heard J. I. Packer's beautiful British accent will greatly appreciate Audible's choice of narrators. In my opinion, this is one of those books virtually every Christian ought to read or listen to, and one that many struggling Christians -- whether disillusioned or suffering or confused -- would find of immense help. It is not "light reading" or "listening," but it is clear, solid, wise, mature, food for the mind and heart, and would repay many times over close attention given to it! Out of the thousands of books in my library, were I to recommend only a few I thought most every Christian ought to read, Knowing God would be among them. But having it available through Audible.com, and read so well by Simon Vance, is a definite 5 star plus, making it easy to listen to in one's car, which is the way I have listened, or wherever one might prefer to listen to a book. In my opinion, 5 stars without a doubt!!! -- Bill Tyson
