Ever wish you could peer into the brain of a published author and learn what tips he's absorbed over the years? How did he get where he is? How many times did he submit manuscripts before he sold his books? Or maybe you'd like to delve into the psychology of writing, and learn what motivates him. How does he balance life with writing? How can regular tweeting help? In Volume 1 of Write Like the Wind, Lazar offers advice on “forbidden words”, “hooking your reader”, and “writing like you talk.”

What would have made Write Like the Wind: Volume 1 better?

This is clearly a heart felt examination of a man's life as a writer but perhaps it is my personal malfunction but I didn't get this at all. There are aspects of the man's life that are extremely poignant and I certainly salute his personal strength and writer's fortitude but this book did not make a favorable impact on me. Sorry. I suck.

What did you love best about The Successful Novelist?

It is an extremely good review of what it takes to become a successful writer from a man who did. It doesn't get much better than that. He is a very good writer (not great, in my opinion, but certainly very good) and he documents much of that in this book.

What other book might you compare The Successful Novelist to and why?

Fiction Writing Demystified, by Thomas Sawyer. Sawyer is another successful writer (was the head writer and producer on Murder, She Wrote for many years) and both volumes are similar in the way they document the process (motivation, mechanics, editing, publishing,, marketing, etc.) of fiction writing. Both are no-nonsense journals of being successful and I enjoyed them both equally and learned A LOT from both.

What does Patrick Lawlor bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Hmmm. Don't know about that, but Lawlor did a very good job in narrating the book. There is not a lot of "performance" on this as it is more reference work which does not require that.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It is very informative and insightful into the professional life of a working, successful fiction writer.

    Any additional comments?

I would love to be a working, successful fiction writer!! ;-)

Lawrence Block is a best-selling author of popular mystery fiction. With over 30 of his works in print, he is as prolific as he is skilled. This collection of essays and articlesfrom his Writer’s Digest columns has been in print for over 20 years. Here he provides invaluable advice to the aspiring writer and the established author. Featuring a witty and honest narration from the author himself, Block presents an illuminating look into the world of the professional writer.

If you could sum up Telling Lies for Fun and Profit in three words, what would they be?

Enlightening, eye-opening, and very certainly entertaining.

What other book might you compare Telling Lies for Fun and Profit to and why?

There are many books for aspiring writers but I would hazard to advance that very few of them are similar to Block's books for aspiring writers.

What about Lawrence Block’s performance did you like?

I believer that Block is really opening up about his life as a writer and put that on the page. Many successful writers give the "party line" about what it takes to be a writer, but I believe that Block is giving us the true soul of a writer of his generation. He is a brilliant man who decided young that he would be a writer and did so...not always to a glorious end, but he is one of my heroes for sticking to his guns, writing junk to survive and genre classics to entertain.

What insight do you think you’ll apply from Telling Lies for Fun and Profit?

The true existence of a successful modern writer.

    Any additional comments?

If you aspire to entertain others with the written word...listen to this over and over. It is brilliant and entertaining.
