The story is wonderful and describes the setting with a perfect amount of detail. The characters are fully developed and their foibles are both comical and infuriating but above all presented as people that we care deeply about as the story proceeds. Money and love play a part in the story. The moral questions of life are sifted and answered and although this all occurs in a time past, the universal nature of such struggles makes this book engrossing for today's reader. The narration is simply perfection.
The story of the author is much more fascinating than this book. Anne Perry was one of two young women convicted of pre-meditated murder. There is a novel element in this mystery but apart from that, this is just a good yarn. Knowing about the colourful and disturbing past of the writer was the tantalizing part for me.
Samuel West reads brilliantly these marvellously-written tales. Action and more action is the order of the day with modern twists that retain the original plot. I was surprised at just how much pleasure I derived from listening and re-listening to this performance. Thinking I was just buying a book of predictable yarns, I was thrilled to find that there was a delicious novelty in each beloved story. Talk about fairy tales for adults! Some of the tales were rather gory but I was transported into a childlike trance and took all the grimness with a grain of salt and just relished the action. Really good book that is not patronizing or coy in any way. Brilliant.
I finished this book in a couple of days because I simply could not resist listening to it for hours on end. The story is quirky, fast-moving and grimly droll. To say the story is novel would be an understatement. There was only one episode that I found ghastly beyond belief and I was actually too scared to go to bed and fall asleep as I was too immersed in a grim and wicked set of cruel actions. For the rest of the book, I was amused to the point of laughing out loud. Written in the first person, I was fond of the protagonist from the very beginning despite his proclivities. Absolutely brilliant narration that made a deviously delicious story even more delectable. Such an imaginative and amusing book.
This is the first book set in this era that I have read and I was doubtful about whether I would enjoy the setting. All that changed after about five seconds. Brilliant story and a perfect narrator. Truly wonderful experience. Although the story is complex, I didn't get lost in it. This author really keeps the story moving. Literally, there is not one boring bit. Always something new and thrilling. I had to take this into the supermarket to finish it as I couldn't wait until after the shopping was done to find out what happened. Loved it to bits much to my surprise. And how great that it is a series. Hooray.
This book conjures the atmosphere of modern New Delhi and the social milieu in which the story occurs. Satirical glimpses of the burgeoning nouveaux riches are hilarious. A great yarn that also provides an insight into the level of corruption in the red-tape-drowned bureaucracy. I just loved the weaving of the various cases that were pursued and how the conclusions were neatly written. Above all this is an amusing and light novel with lovable and droll characters drawn against a backdrop of systemic corruption. I loved it and couldn't put it down. The narrator is a perfect choice and he evokes the characters brilliantly. A lovely marriage of story and performance.
This is such a delightful comedy of human foibles and manners. The characters are lovable and I felt that I had walked into a circle of friends: I really cared about them. The book is so good, I have listened to it twice within the last week. Living in the book is preferable to the grim events of real life. The narrator is simply perfect and picks up the humour and irony to a tee. Pure escapism. I hope there are more to come. Lovely, lovely book.
A lot of the characters are caricatures: the vegetarian, the independent femme fatale etc.
There is quite a lot of preaching about tolerance of difference which I found utterly tedious. The narrator is superb and wasted on such drivel. The author plays it too safe and endeavours to convert the reader to political correctness. A great setting and a fun idea for a cozy but the fearful and timid writing destroyed what it had the potential to offer.
I really enjoyed all the characters in this book. Intriguing story and now I am just awaiting the next in the series. Very atmospheric book...I felt that I was there. The characters are so real and I didn't want to leave them when the story was finished.
I enjoyed this story. The narrator is superb. The writing is imaginative and atmospheric. Great escapism.
This book seems to be well written and the narration is excellent. I simply did not enjoy the era.
