When you're the best at what you do, it's not always easy to walk away. Nathan McBride was retired. The trained Marine sniper and covert CIA operative had put the violence of his former life behind him. But not anymore. A deep-cover FBI agent has disappeared along with one ton of powerful Semtex explosive, enough to unleash a disaster of international proportions. The U.S. government has no choice but to coax Nathan out of retirement.

Move over Jack Reacher! Very good action packed book! I wish Dick Hill could do a better job at women's voices but over all a very good summer thriller.

Happily retired in the village of Three Pines, Armand Gamache, former Chief Inspector of Homicide with the Sûreté du Québec, has found a peace he'd only imagined possible. On warm summer mornings he sits on a bench holding a small book, The Balm in Gilead, in his large hands. "There is a balm in Gilead," his neighbor Clara Morrow reads from the dust jacket, "to make the wounded whole." While Gamache doesn't talk about his wounds and his balm, Clara tells him about hers. Peter, her artist husband, has failed to come home. Failed to show up as promised on the first anniversary of their separation. She wants Gamache's help to find him. Having finally found sanctuary, Gamache feels a near revulsion at the thought of leaving Three Pines. "There’s power enough in Heaven," he finishes the quote as he contemplates the quiet village, "to cure a sin-sick soul." And then he gets up. And joins her.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I think this is the weakest of the series. Slow and slower. Penny's books get into trouble when she leaves "Three Pines". I can't tell you how many times I fell asleep listening to this book. I adore the characters and only kept listening to be with them. Ruth would have tossed this book in the fireplace after the third chapter!

What did you love best about Wayfaring Stranger?

I just about read it straight through. Finally stopped to sleep a few hours. I have read all of Burke's books. Having lived in Louisiana and Texas all my life, he always writes so beautifully of our culture and way of life. This is possibly one of Burke's best.

Jake Crosby’s nine-year-old daughter Katy is pure tomboy, and her dad couldn’t be happier. Since she was old enough to walk, Katy has shared Jake’s love of the outdoors, taking to hunting and fishing as quickly as other kids take to baseball or bike riding. As he packs the truck for a spring turkey hunt, he vows to savor the time with his little girl. But Jake’s hopes for an idyllic weekend are shattered when a band of drug dealers attempts to break into the Crosbys’ remote hunting camp. If you could sum up The Dummy Line in three words, what would they be?

I'm so glad I read this book. It has so many twists and turns. A very easy listen but exciting and thrilling. My only complaint was the narrator's female voice but after the first few chapters that wasn't annoying anymore. Enjoyed it very much!

What made the experience of listening to Say Goodbye the most enjoyable?

This is an intense, intelligent thriller. One reviewer wrote "not for the feint of heart" and I dismissed it , however I found it describes it perfectly. Rough and riveting scenes stay with you. Days after you have finished the book you are still pondering long term affects of nurture and nature. It is disturbing but and excellent listen.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is a riveting book and so well written and read. I normally don't write reviews or give 5 stars. So many levels of each of the characters and so well developed!

Who was your favorite character and why?

I'm not sure I have a favorite. Each were so well defined.

What does Bronson Pinchot bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Beautifully read with a believable accent. I lost myself in the story with no distractions of different voices.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This is one of the view books I wanted to listen to in one sitting. It has been a while since I have become so involved with a book theme, characters and settings.

    Any additional comments?

I sure hope there is a second volume with the same characters.

Her academic career has left her entirely unprepared for the day her sophisticated research is conscripted by unknown forces to help run an unmanned - and thanks to her research, automated - drone army. Would you consider the audio edition of Kill Decision to be better than the print version?

Good story . .unfortunately the reader made the female lead sound like a whiney 17 year old. His men's voice were either goofy or gruff. . .This would probably be a lot better with a different reader. . . at times I felt like I was listening to a book written for very young adults.

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

There are so many u-turns in this story, I found myself shaking my head in disabelief. It is so beautifully written and performed. Stick with it, it takes a chapter to get into the story but well worth the wait. The readers were absolutely amazing.

Creole Belle begins where the last book in the Dave Robicheaux series, The Glass Rainbow, ended. Dave is in a recovery unit in New Orleans, where a Creole girl named Tee Jolie Melton visits him and leaves him an iPod with the country blues song “Creole Belle” on it. Then she disappears. Dave becomes obsessed with the song and the memory of Tee Jolie and goes in search of her sister, who later turns up inside a block of ice floating in the Gulf.

Being from Louisiana, I enjoy James Lee Burke. This is one of his angrier books. Even Molly gets mad in this one. If you are a fan of past books, you will enjoy it. I might have to sit back and digest it some more before I decide it's placement in "best of Dave".

.Lucas Davenport has seen many terrible murder scenes. This is one of the worst. In the small Minnesota town of Deephaven, an entire family has been killed - husband, wife, two daughters, dogs. There’s something about the scene that pokes at Lucas’s cop instincts - it looks an awful lot like the kind of scorched-earth retribution he’s seen in drug killings sometimes. But this is a seriously upscale town, and the husband was an executive vice president at a big bank. It just doesn’t seem to fit.

John, your editor didn't show up on this one. . .and neither the action and clarity of plot. Two many characters and subplots . . However, the last two chapters were vintage Davenport . . but btw, (spoiler alert) do you really think Letty would have just walked by Sam's room and shut the door with gunman in the house?
