  • Elseerian: The Chronicles of Lumineia, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 10 mins)
    • By Ben Hale
    • Narrated By Derek Perkins
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The assassination of heroes was once a warning... for an invasion that nearly destroyed the world. Nations were slaughtered, cities were erased from existence, and defending armies were crushed into oblivion. In weeks, all life stood on the verge of extinction. But the end did not come. Instead the black horde vanished, leaving terrified survivors... and rumors. As the centuries passed the holocaust faded into legend, and finally myth. Across the southern sea a gifted young man is completing his training.

Andrew Stone says: "Loved this book!"
"Not what I was hoping for"
What did you like best about Elseerian? What did you like least?

I enjoy a story that includes plot twist, character flaws, and a bit of angst, but I still want it to be fiction so that I can escape. This story was too straight forward. The characters were all too perfect and fixed in their stereotype. If there was a challenge, that challenge would be solved before the next one came up, I enjoy a challenge within a challenge and got none of that in this story.

The fight scenes were very well done and the author painted a good picture of this world and the story had promise, but it just fell flat for me.

Has Elseerian turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, for the most part this is my favorite genre.

  • Murder Game

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 17 mins)
    • By Christine Feehan
    • Narrated By Tom Stechschulte
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Kadan Montague - a genetically enhanced warrior - is called back from an important assignment in Europe to investigate a series of brutal murders. The suspect is a fellow GhostWalker and, if he isn't found, the entire GhostWalker program will be swept under the carpet, putting the lives of Kadan and all other GhostWalkers in jeopardy. Kadan turns to Tansy Meadows, an elite tracker, to help him hunt down the killer before he can strike again.

    Dinah Edmonson says: "Loved it"
What disappointed you about Murder Game?

Could have been a great murder mystery with twist of sci-fi, but I really wish that I had read all the other reviews that warned of all the sex scenes. I would not have purchased this book. As it was, I fast forwarded through much of it.

Did it need any where near that many sex scenes? No. Tedious.

Could have been gripping and fun without this much erotica and a better ending that wasn't quite so easy a wrap.

What three words best describe Tom Stechschulte’s voice?

The performance was actually very good! I was impressed that he could keep a straight face (voice) during the steamy, hot and heavy parts of the story and he did a number of great voices that never left me questioning which character was speaking.

    Any additional comments?

I’ve been a member of audible for 4.5 years and this is only the second review I’ve written. Surprise and delight compelled me to do so.

How can anyone possibly make interaction with a gooey, stinky, blob of an extraterrestrial funny and engaging? Really? How is that possible? Scalzi did it! This was not only engaging, but laugh out loud funny and at great performance by the narrator. Truly a fun, surprising, feel-good story that is worth a lot more than the $4.95 I paid for it. Enjoy!

  • Shogun: A Novel of Japan

    • UNABRIDGED (48 hrs and 26 mins)
    • By James Clavell
    • Narrated By David Case
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

A bold English adventuer. An invincible Japanese warlord. A beautiful woman torn between two ways of life, two ways of love....An English captain and his crew are shipwrecked on the coast of feudal Japan. They must deal with two Japanese warlords who are struggling to attain the title of Shogun - and the ultimate power that comes with it.

Lorrie says: "A question about further Clavell books."
    "Love the book. Narrator... ugh!"

I was very excited to find this book available on Audible. I had read it many years ago and to this day it is one of my favorites along with Clavell's other books, however the narrator is painful! It sounds like he is reading a list and each line on that list ends in a question.

In the chaos of a storm, there is no energy to his voice. In the horror of a slaying there is no emotion. At the site of beauty there is no awe. Why didn't the producers of this recording not give him a little direction to make it easier to listen to and follow? Never mind making one believe that they are seeing the story through the narrator's eyes and that the characters are different people?

This is the first review I have written because I am so passionate about my sadness that this narration is done so poorly and not enjoyable.

On the other hand, I have to say that John Lee's narration of Clavell's other books is excellent!! Very enjoyable.
