I've listened to this book twice. Actually there are some chapters I've listened to over and over again. Julius Caesar is my favorite historical person. I enjoy reading anything about Caesar so long as it's historically accurate. So reading The Commentaries just doesn't get any better for me. Caesar is a fantastic author and a brilliant general. I think he was the ultimate polymath. My favorite chapter is when Caesar and 10 hand pick troopers as he refers to them meet with Ariovistus and 10 of his body guards. Fascinating encounter and incredible collision of power. This book is my all time favorite and to think it was written over 2000 years ago and is still so relevant in this day and age. Just incredible!!
This book left me with many questions. I know the author sets out this book as an account of the soldiers and officials who lived through the event but still it had me scratching my head in disbelief. If the US handles its foreign affairs in such an incompetent manner everywhere no wonder the world order is breaking down. The CIA officer "Bob" in the story makes you want to puke and to think medals were handed out left right and centre for such a fiasco gives us the indication the US military is in trouble. Let's hope not.
Could not get into this book. I enjoyed Dark Star so thought this one could be another great read but no. The story seemed silly and the characters were not compelling.
I've very much enjoyed most of E. Rutherfurd other books so was deeply disappointed to find myself listening to this one on 1.5x just to get through. I think it was a combination of skipping past the early Roman times and traveling back and forth through time that kept me off balance and disinterested in the cast of characters. But I have friends who've very much enjoyed this book so maybe it's just me.
I'm a fan of Margaret Atwood. I see to be able to enjoy all her books and this one was no exception even though I find short stories in general to be less than satisfying because they're over too quickly leaving so much unfinished. I especially liked the story Stone Mattress for which the book is named. It was a great listen with a satisfying ending ;)
This story will capture you from it's very beginning and will hold you fascinated until the very end. Not only is it very entertaining but also enlightening. This book is a must read for all even though it is very violent and disturbing.
I say boring because unless you're 16 or there about it's difficult to put up with the teenage environment of this story, language, high school scenarios etc.. I also mention unbelievable because Em's reason for putting up with the abusive step Mom is highly unrealistic. This is one of the few books I'm returning for a full refund. I must also say the incredible amount of high ratings is very suspicious to say the least. Don't be fooled this is not a very good book.
I bought this book when it first came out, it had no reviews or ratings. This is unusual for me but wow was I happy with my selection. I've listened to this book twice now and will probably listen a third time sooner than later. The author gives you an excellent view into the sacrifices made by both sides in this horrific and senseless conflict. The narration is first rate an excellent performance for an excellent book. I highly recommend Blood and Armor.
This was a well written book depicting the lives of average North Koreans. These people have truly led incredible yet horrific lives. The North Korean regime is evil on a level that's hardly conceivable to the average North American. I enjoyed this listen very much and agree whole heartedly with the title. I wish with all my heart that better things are to come and soon to the North Korean people.
I'm not a religious person. The book is very centered on Bonhoeffer's religious thoughts. This turned me off and I almost stopped listening. However Bonhoeffer seemed like such an intelligent, inspiring and charismatic person I listened on. I sort of tuned out of the religious thoughts and followed his life story. Anyone with an interest in Nazi Germany and the lives of those who persevered through this time will not be disappointed. If you're a religious person you'll love it, I think.
