I have listened to a few other Joseph Finder including company man, killer instinct and vanished. I liked them all, and this one is by far the best. A like-able good guy yet not too good to be real, various interesting characters and plot twists. I also love this narrator, he keeps it interesting and is not distracting, its a voice I that matches what I think the main character, Nick, is like.
Over the years, I've listened to literally hundreds of audible books. I was so pleasantly surprised by this one. I have given 5 stars to about 20% of the books I read, and this one earns it for sheer entertainment value. I was skeptical when I learned these books originally were self-published....I've been burned by too many terribly written but highly rated books on kindle...but saw this recommend by an audible editor and decided to try it. I am so happy I did. A smart interesting plot and characters. Two books in one so very credit worthy. A fun and interesting read. I also like that it is not so dark and depressing, if it were a movie it would probably be rated pg, and I like that sometimes, still dramatic and interesting. I think if you like Patrick Rothfuss, you'd also like this.
This is my first encounter with "true grit" and I was very pleasantly surprised! Wanted to listen before going to the Coen brothers version. I agree with many who have said it is a modern classic. Keeps your attention, brilliant dialogue, characters that stick with you. I completely disagree with other listeners who did not like the narrator. Her interpretation of male voices is no worse than the best male narrators attempts at female voices; while her reading of young Mattie was amazing! There would not be a better narration without a full cast. I have listened to over 500 audible books, and would rate this in the top 10% at least.
