  • The Pleasure of My Company

    • UNABRIDGED (4 hrs and 54 mins)
    • By Steve Martin
    • Narrated By Steve Martin

Daniel Pecan Cambridge, 30, 35, 38 or 27, depending on how he feels that day, is a young man whose life is rich and full, provided he never leaves his Santa Monica apartment. After all, outside there are 8-inch-high curbs and there's always the horrible chance he might see a gas station attendant wearing a blue hat. So, except for the occasional trip to the Rite Aid to admire the California girl Zandy and to buy earplugs because they're on sale, he stays home a lot. And good thing, too.

John says: "An Odd, Compelling Story"
    "Hard to recommend"

I really wanted to like this story, and as another reviewer says, the only redeeming element is the author's narration. Steve Martin is a comedic genious; however, the longer I listened, the more I began to realize there would be no "pay-off" at the end of nearly 5 hours. I bought this as a break from my usual mystery/thrillers. Oh well. It's not the worst audible book I've purchased, but extremely far from the best.

  • Show Me the Buffet

    • ORIGINAL (56 mins)
    • By John Pinette

Don't think John Pinette is funny just because he's fat and is always talking about food. What's wrong with you? Don't you eat? Even if you don't tip the scale, you'll be able to find common ground with his hysterical routines that have landed him appearances on such important stages as Caroline's Comedy Hour, Showtime's Comedy All Stars, and An Evening at the Improv. Or perhaps you already know Pinette as the "fat mugging victim" on the last episode of Seinfeld.

Jesse says: "It gets no better!"
    "Absolutely Hysterical"

My partner and I listen to this on every road trip we take. We missed seeing him live recently and are kicking ourselves. John Pinnette is a riot!

  • Utopia: A Thriller

    • ABRIDGED (5 hrs and 44 mins)
    • By Lincoln Child
    • Narrated By Eric Stoltz

Rising out of the Nevada canyons, Utopia is a theme park so technologically advanced as to be awe-inspiring. But serious mishaps are starting to cause concern, and things turn from bad to worse when a group of mercenaries infiltrates the park's computerized infrastructure, holding the entire park hostage. The engineer who designed the park now must find a way to save it. "A real thrill-a-minute read," says Booklist.

Trajanrome says: "Exciting and well read"
    "A Fun Summer Listen"

"Utopia" - abridged - was a fun listen during the summer while working in my yard. So its somewhat fluffy, it is still better than any recent James Patterson work. However, I'm annoyed to see there is now an unabridged version available on audible with 14 additonal hours - I tend to go unabridged, but the story sounded good and there being no other option at the time... Eric Stolz did a fine job narrating; however, there is a different narrator for the unabridged and I'm half tempted to get the unabridged version to see how different the stories are.

  • Diary: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 47 mins)
    • By Chuck Palahniuk
    • Narrated By Martha Plimpton
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Diary takes the form of a "coma diary" kept by one Misty Tracy Wilmot as her husband lies senseless in a hospital after a suicide attempt. It is a dark, hilarious, and poignant act of storytelling from America's favorite, most inventive nihilist.

    Todd says: "What a trip!"
    "What a trip!"

While I must admit that I liked Chuck Palahniuk's "Lullaby" more, I was really drawn into this story - especially by Martha Plimpton's wonderful narration. I simply had to know what the heck was at the root of all the chaos. When all was revealed, I was fairly satisfied. Chuck Palahniuk is clearly one of the most creative (if not twisted) minds of my generation and I look forward to his next novel with great anticipation.

  • The Prometheus Deception

    • UNABRIDGED (17 hrs and 26 mins)
    • By Robert Ludlum
    • Narrated By Paul Michael

A new world order is taking shape. Only one man can stop it. Pray that he will succeed. The Prometheus Deception is classic Ludlum - a world of murderous wheels within wheels where nothing and no one are what they appear, and violence and sudden death lurk around every corner. Also available abridged.

Lester says: "Not up to his standards"
"Keeps you sitting on the edge of your seat"

The best conspiracy book I have read!
    Very thought provoking.
Will keep you sitting on the edge of your seat for hours.

  • Four Blind Mice

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 7 mins)
    • By James Patterson
    • Narrated By Peter J. Fernandez, Michael Emerson
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Detective Alex Cross returns in his most harrowing case yet - one that risks the life of his closest friend and partner, John Sampson. Cross and Sampson go deep behind military lines to confront the most ruthless killers they have ever encountered - and their even more threatening controller. Discovering the identity of this lethal genius will prove to be Cross' most terrifying challenge ever.

James says: "Another Knock At the Door"
"Infinitely better than recent Alex Cross stories"

I like Alex Cross. I loved the earlier stories, but after Roses are Red, I swore I would never, ever read another James Patterson book. It's an addiction. I read Violets are Blue, a slight redemption, but I was still borderline. Beach House was adequate, and the new series, 1st to Die and 2nd Chance were an interesting change. Four Blind Mice is a good book, ill-timed storyline, but such is life. I find myself looking forward to some more enjoyable quick reads/listens from Patterson (what is it, every six months?)....

  • The F Word: How to Survive Your Family

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 31 mins)
    • By Louie Anderson
    • Narrated By Louie Anderson

Take it from a man whose family background includes brawls, visits from "aliens," star-billing on FBI wanted posters, and, oh yes, an altercation with the Swedish Mafia - families can be brutal! But because we all have one, Louie Anderson has written this honest, funny, and brilliant survival manual for anyone who's ever choked on the F Word.

Todd says: "Never a fan, UNTIL NOW"
    "Never a fan, UNTIL NOW"

Wow! This book was fantastic! His tips for surviving toxic families are right on the mark! Mr. Anderson, if you are reading this, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you...

  • From a Buick 8

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 21 mins)
    • By Stephen King
    • Narrated By James Rebhorn, Bruce Davison, Becky Ann Baker
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Stephen King's first full-length solo novel since Dreamcatcher, the long-awaited From a Buick 8 is "nearly flawless and one terrific entertainment," says Publishers Weekly. A strange car acts as a conduit between our world and some other...and the boogeyman of this creepy story is our collective fascination with deadly things.

J M says: "Essence of Stephen King"
    "Dreadfully boring..."

Having recently listened to and thoroughly enjoyed The Talisman (Unabridged), Dreamcatcher (Unabridged), and Everything's Eventual (Unabridged), I was really excited for this Audible book. I've always thought Bruce Davison is a great actor (and he is) but, after an hour of his droning (and after starting the book over six times), I've given up! I'm fairly tenacious, but I've relegated this to the archives for the next time I'm bedridden and without any form of entertainment...
